We have a fairly large group of middle school students who refuse to go to class - daily. Staff have implemented check-in check-out (CICO), modified class assignments, changed schedules so they are with their friends in class (what they want) & without friends in class (remove the distraction.) They sometimes receive lunch detention, sometimes are suspended (not ideal when you WANT the student be in class), constant communication home. Various reward systems have been put into place; we have a great PBIS para. But these students absolutely refuse to go to class; when they do, they often cuss out the teachers and when they are in the halls they are causing problems. What can we do when it seems like we have tried everything?

One of my 8th grades refuses to complete writing assignments. He can provide lengthy verbal responses, but will not use typing or even speech-to-text. One-on-one help has increased production but not by much. He does not have fine motor deficits.
