Famine - Sinéad O'Connor (1994)

Famine serves as a lyrical history lesson, a means of cathartic expression, and a roadmap outlining the path to a possible future of peace. The song debunks the idea of the "Potato Famine" and outlines the starvation, historical oppression, and overall traumatization inflicted on the Irish by the British.
The song focuses heavily on the psychological toll, referencing alcoholism, drug addiction, PTSD, denial of truth-telling, grief, and likens the country to "a child that's been battered." The extended version also features spoken word by SDLP leader John Hume, who was instrumental in the North of Ireland peace process.
