This will only work if you use a proper highlighting techniques. Because it is a pointless strategy if you do not understand what important information looks like, you will likely highlight everything they come across as you are reading.

For example, you may want to start by having highlight the title of the selection.

You may also want them to highlight important dates or words that are in bold or italics. 

This information may pop up if they have to answer questions about the reading.

 As students are highlighting, they will have to pay close attention to the reading, thus remaining actively involved in the process.

You need to ask or find information how to apply this strategies so that you can be sure that you are using the strategy correctly.

It may be beneficial for you to start with a series of short passages or articles.. As you read aloud the passage, you will stop periodically to ask questions related to the story.

For example, let's say you are reading an excerpt from The Three Little Gogs, specifically the part where one of the dogs has decided to build his house out of straw. You may ask aloud, 'Why would he use straw instead of something sturdier?' 

You are showing that you are not only reading the story, but are also actively involved in the reading. By thinking aloud throughout your reading, you will increasing your ability to comprehend the text.

This strategy is used as actively reading a text, and can be used with long or short passages.

When you are making predictions, you will guessing what will happen next in the story. For example, in the story of the Three Dogs, the wolf visits each of the dogs in an attempt to get into their homes.

After the wolf visits the first dog's home and blows the house down, the someone may ask you 'What do you think will happen next when the wolf visits the next dog's home?' the person asking you to make a prediction and then continue to read, you will find out whether your prediction was correct.

Effective questioning should be practiced before, during, and after reading. 

When readers ask questions before they read a text, they are activating prior knowledge and making predictions.

Both of these activities engage the child’s interest and increase the likelihood that he will connect with the text and comprehend it.

Questioning during reading can take the form of self-questioning, questioning the text, or questioning the author.

It creates a dialogue in the child’s mind as he reads.

Asking questions after reading the text can stimulate critical analysis and further research on the topic.
