The theme I’ve learned throughout all these topics covered in the course, throughout all the modules, is the rich history of black culture. This African-American class made me realize that there are layers of history when it comes to the African-American culture. Modules that I read in class, like understanding the civil histories of black experience, African-American liberal or fine arts, Black Feminisms, or Black masculinity, contributed to my understanding of African-American history. The rich history of black culture is a testament to resilience, creativity, and the enduring human spirit in the face of immense adversity. Even going back to my discussion question prompt 2: In what ways do you believe that studying African-American histories, fine arts, and culture can influence you both personally and professionally? How might this knowledge be applied to your future career? My answer to this question: As a film and media studies major, studying African-American history, fine arts, and culture can influence me both personally and professionally by fostering an appreciation and understanding of African-American culture and its contributions to shaping history through fine arts, music, and social justice. Personally, it makes me proud to be an African-American. Our culture is so unique that we can sometimes influence American culture through our music, films, style, and personality. Because of that, that is why other cultures often emulate what they see in black people because there is a fascination with black culture. With that fascination, it can influence others unknowingly where they have love for the black culture, whether it's through music, movies, fashion, or our personalities. Professionally, we are the trendsetters. But with black people being trendsetters, it can lead to people emulating our style and aesthetic outside of the black culture. Other cultures may not want to credit us and give black people their flowers through their contributions to history, which will then create cultural appropriation. But even with cultural appropriation from black culture, it just shows how much of an influence black people have on other cultures. We’re very powerful and unique! Point blank period. This knowledge can be applied to my career as a film student by creating more black history. I’m inspired by directors like Issa Rae, Jordan Peele, Tyler Perry, and Ryan Coogler. All of these directors are contributing to Black history through their creative storytelling in their films. These directors are showing me what’s possible for the next generation of filmmakers like me. Just to cite a reference, the YouTube video in which Ryan Coogler talks about Black Panther was a perfect example of him showing love and appreciation, and how much the African-American history influenced him to make the Black Panther, and what it means to be African. When he said those words, it was powerful because we want to see more representation of that. In black pop culture, the black writers are making a difference and changing history by producing a rich body of cinema that explores themes of identity, race, freedom, and the human condition. From slave narratives to the works of Black Marvel Superhero Characters, from writer Ryan Coogler or Insecure by Issa Rae, is showcasing how black creators and directors are shaping the cinema landscape. The history of black culture is not just years and years of proving our worth in American history. It’s more of our accomplishments, resilience, and bravery to continue to have creative expression that shapes and inspires people's lives. Creating this Padlet was fun! I liked how I was able to express my opinion. I haven’t faced any challenges yet that have prohibited me from being my authentic self. But if that day ever comes, I won’t back down from a challenge.
