TBI may occur when the head is hit by an element in a quick and violent manner, or when an object pierces the skull and penetrates the brain's structure.

In the case of Maribel, this brain injury happened because of the impact of a ladder while she was trying to help her father. According to the CDC, TBI is a major cause of death and disability, and depending on the severity may face health problems that last a few days or the rest of their lives. Maribel experienced a severe TBI injury that affected her childhood development and limited her ability to create relationships.
