Wishing a warm welcome to all our Nursing, AHP & elective learners completing placements at MFT.

The RMCH PEF Team is made up of PEF Laura Mallinson & PEP's Sadiyya Khan & Hannah Vangundy. Our role is to support you whilst you are on placement. We work closely with the learning environments and LEELs to ensure you have a fantastic learning experience.

We visit the departments weekly to meet you and check in with how you're getting on. We organise/facilitate CYP Learning opportunities & Chat 'n' Craft guided reflection sessions. Please review the corresponding tabs on this PEFlet for further information on this.

Remember: It is your responsibility to work within your scope of practice!

It is important for you to ensure your practice educator is assigned at the beginning of your placement. Please ensure you contact your placement before commencing to ensure an educator has been assigned to you on your first day.

Additionally, you will need to ensure that your orientation and initial interview are completed ideally on the first day. As PARE is your responsibility we encourage you to make sure that this is carried out timely, and that any concerns are raised early enough for your assessor assist.  

*Your break is not included in your hours on your timesheet*

All learners are expected to partake in the service hours of your placement environment (e.g. the 24 hour / 7 days a week shift pattern).

In line with MFT policy, staff and learners are not permitted to request/work more than 2 consecutive long day.

Please be respectful to the LEELs who complete your off duty.

Any changes to the off duty need to be discussed with the LEELs or Ward Manager to ensure adequate supervision and support for learners on each shift.

It is the learners responsibility to report sickness / absence to your placement area prior to your shift. Upon returning to practice please contact the team to inform them of your return.

Please ensure you follow the university guidance in reporting absence.

HEEs brand-new nursing, midwifery and trainee nursing associate student hub has just launched. The hub informs students about available resources, how to access support and see the study journeys of their peers.

You cannot use an existing support worker or NHS Professionals login when on placement as a student! Never share your login with anyone, and never use anyone elses (e.g. supervisor or assessor)

• Ensure clothes are suitable for work purposes, are clean and in a good state of repair, always maintaining a standard of professionalism.

• Clothes should be free from strong smells, for example, body odour, cigarettes and vapes, etc.

• Shoes must be closed toe in line with health and safety policy, apart from staff working in an office environment.

Examples of clothing deemed unacceptable for non-uniformed staff

• Jeans*/cargo trousers

• Jeggings/leggings (unless covered by a tunic/dress)

• T-shirts with any offensive logo

• Jogging bottoms

• Shorts*

• Camouflage

• Miniskirts/dresses

• Sun, beach or spaghetti strap dresses/tops

• Any clothing that is overly revealing of the cleavage, stomach, midriff or thighs is unacceptable

• Sweatshirts* or hooded tops

• Flip flops

• Sports wear

• Halter neck or strapless tops or dresses

• Socks with offensive logo

*These items may be acceptable in some circumstances where agreed with the manager, due to the nature of the work

If you are not following the correct uniform policy, you may be asked to leave placement and return when you are adhering to policy.

Please be aware, you will need to attend the virtual Induction and face-to-face Fire Safety sessions within MFT ONCE during your entire course. This must be attended during your placement and not before.

Reminder- If you arrange a spoke placement and are then unable to attend or are off sick. Please contact the area to cancel the spoke or notify them of your sickness and ensure your timesheet is amended to reflect this change.

These learning opportunities will support you to develop the knowledge and skills related to your PARE assessment of performance (proficiencies/competencies), exposures to other fields of practice, or clinical skills.

To book on to a desired session, please email pef.inbox@mft.nhs.uk and specify the teaching session you want to attend. Please note the spaces for face-to-face sessions are limited due to room capacity and will be issued on a first come first serve basis.

You will only be able to book onto a teaching session whilst you are scheduled to attend placement.

If you are attending a teaching session on your day off, you can attend in your own clothes (non-uniform). However, please ensure to bring either your university or NHS ID Badge.

You may present to your PA/PS your notes, reflections or discuss the knowledge you have gained. If they feel you have acquired sufficient knowledge the proficiencies can be recorded as 'achieved'.
