In The Scarlet Letter, there are many symbols that have not been interpreted to their full extent. The largest example of this is the meteor that Dimmesdale sees in the sky. The article suggests that historical change through symbolism was the basis of 18th-century philosophy; therefore, the concept of "Enlightenment thought" is widely referenced. The first interpretation of the meteor is that all signs have a sender. This ties back to the idea that "God makes everything happen for a reason. This attaches subjective meaning to the sign, as though directly from the sender. The interpretations fall into 2 categories, meanings taken as being attached by a sender, and/or sent from the sender. A large point made is that people after the Enlightenment are less likely to believe a natural phenomenon is a sign coming from God; people are more likely to assume he is just mentally ill. The second interpretation of the meteor is the dismissal of natural signs as meaningless natural occurrences. Dimmesdale believes this sign is addressed to himself alone, and his mind has shaped this into an imagination of a sign. "It is an imagination that molds the meteoric appearance that Dimmesdale beholds into a letter" (Hull, 145).

Reasoning of the Meteor in Scarlet Letter.

The Scarlet Letter is a novel written to symbolize hope, adultery, and sin. Hester and Dimmesdale committed adultery together. From the results, Hester had a daughter and everyone discovered the sin she committed, later forcing her to wear a scarlet letter on her chest. Dimmesdale was still in hiding from his sin and when a meteor crossed the sky, in which he believed took on a red hue and formed a letter "A" in the stars. The relation to Hester's scarlet letter shows that Dimmesdale believed that God was showing him a sign to admit to his own sin or feel the shame of his consequences within him forever. Since he could not publically admit to his sin, being the town's minister, God showed them with the meteor of the A (Hawthorne, 145). He was so paranoid he started saying "It is done! muttered the minister, covering his face with his hands. the whole town will awake, and hurry forth, and find me here!" (Hawthorne, 145). It was said that "Dimmesdale was overcome with a great horror of mind." (Hawthorne 144). The meteor did not tell the whole town it was all in his mind. In the end, the symbolism of the meteor means that God was trying to expose his sin of adultery. Though Dimmesdale believed the A was a sign that he should either bare the ultimate shame of his sin or confess it, the town believed the letter symbolized "angel' and that Governor Winthrop had passed on from his death bed and peacefully entered heaven as an angel. (Hawthorne, 145).
