This quote shows the idea that men who choose to show feminine qualities are viewed as men who are not able to have strength and power and don't fit in with other men who may show their masculinity through their strength and work in the army. The requirement of men to always display their strength and the inability to ever show a weakness or their soft side keeps them trapped in a cage. This quote demonstrates how the China views the stoicism or lack of it to reflect of their government and country. This strong sense of nationalism can force a false truth on the boys of China. Lamenting that boys no longer wish to become war heroes also hints at the specific roles the Chinese government wishes men to play. All of this cages them, forcing them to change themselves both physically and mentally to appease their oppressive government.
