• Happy to gain hands-on experience in the lab.

-A bit anxious due to my lack of experience, especially with hands-on tasks like the streaking step.

-I struggled with the techniques involved in culturing the strain from stock/specimens due to a lack of skill.

-To overcome this, I asked for guidance from Azhari and Dr. Alfizah, which helped improve my technique.

2. What have you done?

• Received briefing from Prof. Madya Dr. Alfizah and laboratory staff regarding the overall workflow for the project on lytic bacteriophage induction from multidrug-resistant H. pylori strain.

• Learned the safety protocols and hygiene practices required when working in a microbiology lab.

• Observed and assisted in preparing H. pylori cultures using appropriate growth media under microaerophilic conditions.

• Practiced basic streaking techniques to subculture H. pylori strains.

• Always maintain strict aseptic and hygiene techniques when handling H. pylori due to its pathogenic nature.

• Proper preparation of blood agar and bacterial cultures is essential for reliable experimental results.

• Ensure correct labelling and documentation of all samples to avoid cross-contamination and mix-ups.

4. Your feelings & thoughts
I am excited to begin hands-on work with bacteriophage research as it’s a field I have been curious about. It feels rewarding to apply theoretical microbiology knowledge in a real laboratory setting. At the same time, I am slightly anxious because of the technical precision required, especially during bacterial culture handling.

5. Any difficulties/concerns? How did you cope?
Initially, I struggled with maintaining proper streaking technique and ensuring even bacterial growth. I also found it challenging to adjust to the pace of lab work while keeping accuracy. To improve, I asked for feedback from Dr. Alfizah and the lab assistants after each attempt and practiced under their supervision until I was more confident.

• Perform UV induction on H. pylori strains to stimulate prophage release.

2. What have you done?

   • For the first week, I learn how to prepare blood agar as well as how to do streaking on the blood agar. Not just that, I also learnt about the procedure as well as things that need to keep in mind before, during and after entering a bacteriology laboratory.

   • Always remember to fill up the book at the front before entering the lab.

   • Always fill the google docs for each tools that we will be using.

   • Always keep the hygiene in the laboratory.

4. Your feelings & thoughts

   • I am excited because this is my first time preparing a blood agar as well as handling bacteria.

   • I am also nervous when handling those bacteria because the bacteria that I handled was H.pylori which is a bacteria that is quite challenging to culture.

   • I always forgot to fill the google docs whenever I use the tools that are provided in the laboratory.

   • To avoid it, I always ask my friends to remind me to fill it after we use the tools.

2. What have you done?

• I have been learning the alphabet in sign language in an online class with my teacher, but in a different style which is there is no talking using a microphone because my teacher wants me to experience the real way of communicating in sign language. I learn only through the gestures my teacher makes, and he will send a text if I do not understand

• Remembering the alphabet in sign language is very important because some terms do not have a specific sign, so you need to use the alphabet to spell them out

• I am very excited because I finally can start gaining some new skills which may help contribute to the community

• The difficulty is that there are so many signs to remember, and some signs look similar, so you might get mixed up

• To overcome this, I need to practice a lot and try to understand the connection between the signs and the alphabet so I can differentiate it.

· Initially I found t challenging to adapt to the workplace principles and regulations in the Japanese companies, which differ greatly from those in Malaysia

· To cope, I kept open-minded, asked questions, and observed how local staff managed and adapted their tasks in different cultures. This helped me gradually adjust and understand the expectations

In my first week of elective posting, I was introduced to the basic operations of industrial waste management, particularly how disposal trucks work to transport and manage factory waste. I observed the processes involved in collecting waste from factories and how it’s transported using specialized trucks. I had the chance to explore the mechanism of the truck, including how the hydraulic system functions to lift and compact the waste before disposal.

It was my first time seeing up-close how waste is handled on a large industrial scale, and it gave me a new perspective on environmental hygiene and public health.

The truck system uses *hydraulic pressure** to operate—this includes lifting heavy loads, compressing waste, and emptying the contents efficiently.

4. Your feelings & thoughts:

Honestly, I felt excited, curious, and a bit nostalgic. Watching the hydraulic mechanisms in action reminded me of the physics lessons from my foundation years. It felt like rediscovering an old passion—something I used to enjoy studying but haven’t revisited in a while since starting medical school.

There was something deeply satisfying about watching theory come to life. I’ve been so focused on clinical knowledge that I’d almost forgotten how interconnected all disciplines are. This experience helped me appreciate how engineering, physics, and health sciences work hand-in-hand in real-world applications—especially in environmental health.

I also felt a sense of admiration for the workers who deal with these systems daily. It’s a physically demanding job, but vital for public health.

At first, I found it slightly challenging to understand the full mechanics of the truck system. It had been a while since I studied hydraulic systems, and some of the terminology was unfamiliar.

To cope, I took some time after the visit to do a quick refresher on hydraulic systems using YouTube videos and articles. I also asked one of the supervisors to explain the system in simpler terms, and he was very helpful and patient. That helped me connect the dots and understand the process much better.

For Week 2, I plan to follow the operations inside the factories more closely. I want to observe how waste is handled at the source—how it's collected, sorted, and prepared for disposal. I’m also curious to see how factory workers are protected from exposure to hazardous materials and whether there are any health screening or safety training programs in place.

Hopefully, I’ll also get a chance to speak with the safety officers or environmental health personnel to understand their roles better.
