Wade decision in 1973, abortion was legal in the United States before the stage where a woman could first feel the movements of the fetus, normally around the fourth month from conception. Roe v. Wade, a legal case in which the Supreme Court ruled abortion unconstitutional, criminalized abortion as it was considered to oppose the fourteenth amendment. This amendment states that no person should be deprived of life, liberty or property without due process of law.
