The most interesting aspect of John Redman's story is that he is in such great contrast to everyone else in the war. Whereas most people joined the patriotic effort for their own sake, Redman had everything to loose by joining the continental forces. The British (in the event of their victory) offered slaves freedom for supporting them, but Redman chose to support the patriotic cause. Ironically, he was denied pension from the American government, even though he fought for the dragoons. This is interesting because other parties who involved themselves in the war on the side of the patriots were celebrated. For example, women in the American revolution were turned into heroes for spinning cloth. Meanwhile, teh few who participated in the war as soldiers but were black were still persecuted, and were (in a way) punished for their efforts. So in short, the most interesting part of John Redman's story was the lack of recognition for doing far more than was expected from him.
