When I talk about Intercultural Communication, I will always look at myself. Looking that I am a foreign student from a country very far from here. I know exactly that one of the skills that can make me survive here is how I can communicate between people from across countries. The city of Coventry that I live ihas the nickname " City of Culture"in 2021. I'm sure those words were formed because of the diverse cultures of the people who live in this city. When I came here, I saw a variety of people from local people, immigrants, non-natives or immigrants from Asia, Europe, America, Africa, all continents in the world. During my study abroad, I just felt that University life in my country, Indonesia and Coventry, United Kingdom is very different. The most significant difference is that when I’m in my undergraduate study, back in my country, there is not much understanding and intercultural communication skills to apply because basically we all speak the same language, come from the same backgrounds, and are still in the same country. But at Coventry, I felt like I had to learn from the beginning. I had to really study what culture developed around me, all kinds of rules, new habits and get to know various personality types not only from his name but from his background, which country he came from, and what culture shaped them in their home country.

In this first semester, I received a Transnational Professional Development class led by Nigel and this class discussed a lot about the developing culture, especially in the world of work in the United Kingdom and Europe. Knowing "Intercultural Communication" cannot be separated from how the role of language affects our communication between each other. Language and culture are important variables in this area. Language is one of the most obvious, although certainly may not be the most fundamental, challenges to intercultural communication. People who do not speak the same language as each other or who believe they have a poor grasp of the other's language may have difficulty communicating. When people do not speak the same language, there is a chance that they will misunderstand each other. However, speaking the same language does not always imply that you will understand each other. Even people who speak the same language do not have the same idea of what words imply. Even though civilizations share the same language, they do not necessarily communicate.

In TPD's class we have learned that “ Increasingly, employers are seeking an international dimension to these competencies – essentially the global graduate that can take their place in the global economy” (Source: Diamond et al (2011)) by studying intercultural communication we become understand that we have the opportunity to build multicultural teamwork, which is really important in every company. To listen and show empathy for others (understanding that others' viewpoints and feelings can be informed by an understanding of their background and culture). See issues from multiple perspectives from your own culture and that of other cultures.

In my reflection towards the choice of topics that I want to study in more detail in class, I chose “Understanding large and complex organisations” and “Networking/Self-Promotion” as things I want to develop professionally. I chose this topic because I imagine that in the future I will join a large organization or company and a large organization or company must have its own level of complexity based on the culture created in the work environment. In the marketplace, the organizational system is very important in order to create a strong foundation. I believe a strong system can make a strong company too. This system was created from the regularity of the people according to their respective job desks or titles. There are several types of systems that are often applied in a company: Hierarchical, Functional, Divisional, Matrix, Team Based. The goal is to be able to achieve the goal or goal what you want to achieve is not only faster but farther. In addition, to maintain a culture of mutual respect for one another. These days, many people talk about a toxic work environment (Toxic Environment) because many people are starting to be aware to it, therefore a positive culture must be planted.

To achieve common goals, such as through divisional division, it takes people who are experts in their fields and to create this will be determined by how an individual develops character and skills in the work environment and shapes them to be a professional. As I quote from the internet “… participate in professional development to learn and apply new knowledge and skills that will improve their performance on the job. “To be able to develop ourselves professionally, we must first identify ourselves. What exactly is our passion? So that we can give performance in an area that we know that we are passionate about? I believe that every large company or organization needs people who are experts in their fields. That way, the workload will feel easier to deal with because we see it not as a burden but as a new challenge to our expertise.

To review this, I believe that the way we build our network will also determine. Networking is the key. Because I often find that it seems as if someone's luck can be created just because he has good networking skills. Within the organization, networking is very important because apart from being focused on our part, we also have to focus on ensuring that we have people we can rely on, we can work with, who can inspire and so on. To be able to build a good network, we also need a good image that we want to give to people. As a relevant example, these days Social Media can be the subject of people's reviews when applying for jobs because the image created on social media can be a reflection of that person and whether it is good or not in the company. Then I found out that there are also people who put a lot of effort into creating content for their social media. With this, the person not only uses social media as a means of socializing but also opens up more opportunities in the future. You could say that creating a network requires good self-promotion so that people can trust us. That way this culture will produce a domino effect that can help achieve our goals in the organization or company.

Studying leadership has always been of interest to me. Because leadership is the essence and the leader is a reflection of the organization or company being led. Leaders are people who have the privilege to determine what culture to instill in the organization. For this topic I chose 3 special topics that I believe can support my knowledge and skills. I chose to study “ The fundamentals of Leadership and motivation ”, “ Project Management ”, and “ Problem Solving ”

As we learned in the TPD class, there are 6 types of leadership. There are Affiliative, Democratic, Commanding, Pacesetting, Visionary, Coaching . From what I learned in class, I think that my leadership style is Affiliative and Visionary. Affiliative because of my nature which always puts the welfare of others first in order to build strong emotions for the people on my team. Visionary because I know very well that my perspective tends to depict visions and big pictures. I used to call it “Big Picture Person ” rather than the “ Detail Oriented Person“By always sticking to the goals and vision, I make it a motivation for me and the team that it is important to continue to reflect on the vision of what makes us as a team move to a certain level.

For me, being a leader and leadership must be relevant to our daily lives. Leadership is not just a status but as a way we live life. I believe that " Everybody creates to lead, but before then we need somebody to lead us " but to hone my leadership, I need to learn the fundamentals of leadership. For example, one of my dream jobs is to become a producer. Especially producer films. Even during production, on set the director is in charge, but the overall idea of the possibility of creating a film such as pre-production, production and post-production is in the hands of the producer. I want to apply my leadership by creating the basis or motivation why from the start we have to prepare and produce a film.

To review this I also need to learn project management to identify what things can be strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, threats of the project. Quoting from the internet that " Project management is the application of processes, methods, skills, knowledge and experience to achieve specific project objectives according to the project acceptance criteria within agreed parameters. Project management has final deliverables that are constrained to a finite timescale and budget .” Being able to work on or lead a project requires good management skills in order to reduce the possibility of bad or losses that can occur.

In leadership, the most important thing for me is how a leader can solve problems. For me, great leaders are leaders who can provide solutions and inspiration. Because in leading, the perspective of a leader will be increasingly honed and formed. If a leader doesn't have a positive perspective, then it's likely that the motivation of the team will not be able to inspire the team to keep moving forward. The problem solving ability of a leader is very crucial, starting from how the leader defines the problem, identifies the root of the problem, becomes open and honest with circumstances and feelings, and begins to think about what possible solutions to the problem.

“ Problem solving is the essence of what leaders exist to do. As leaders, the goal is to minimize the occurrence of problems – which means we must be courageous enough to tackle them head-on before circumstances force our hand .”

They see around, beneath and beyond the problem itself. They see well beyond the obvious. The most effective leaders approach problems through a lens of opportunity . That is what leadership is for me.

From what I learned, to review my vision as a film producer I see that what I learn and focus on in the TPD class can shape my ability to adapt and lead in that area of work. Being a film producer requires not only technical skills but also a broad way of thinking because when we talk about films, we should not have narrow mindedness. In the production of what I have experienced before, it is important for me to have management skills in various aspects because surely my team will follow me and I am the one who has to create the culture in the environment and during the production.

In the shadow of my career, I want to focus myself on working in the area of media or film with the documentary genre. I have always found that the documentary film genre is very interesting because it is not fiction but the reality of an issue or truth that must be expressed visually.

I plan to work for a media company such as Vice Media Group because I always follow Vice's media content and issues raised as well as issues that few people know about and need to be more exposed to the public. I found Vice Media Group's openness very interesting and I was interested in challenging myself to dive into that area. I want to be a film producer who produces films that are meaningful and have an element of narrative there, not just for entertainment. Another media company I look up to is National Geographic Documentary Films. The quality of documentaries made by National Geographic is very interesting and inspiring from various aspects. They also tend to open our eyes to the history that has happened, the culture around us and so on.

I know that being a film producer requires skills, management, a personality that can be an example and a portfolio of what I have done or can be used as a support for my career. That way, I have to try more opportunities in similar areas with the aim of increasing my experience and sharpening my knowledge.
