<title>At Cubberley high school Doug was active against the Vietnam war. He organized students to take part in Stop the Draft Week in Oakland. The book Hassling, written about those tumultous years, described him this way, &quot;Doug was the behind-the-scenes idea man - a true strategist who could work out day-to-day tactics that were brilliant.&quot; At the University of California Berkeley in 1969, Doug helped lead the longest strike in the campus&#39;s history for the successful establishment of ethnic studies programs.Doug took part in Chicano Moratorium march against the Vietnam war in east Los Angeles in 1970 after which he suffered a severe beating at the hands of the LA police. In 1971, Doug visited Mao&#39;s China on a delegation from the Revolutionary Union. This was a year before Nixon&#39;s trip to open relations between the US and China.</title>

<title>Doug and I worked together in the Registrar’s office at Stanford Law School. I have very fond memories of working with him…his humor, his administrative abilities, and his calming influence. After leaving Stanford, I would have lunch with several of my former colleagues and at those times, it was great to see and laugh with Doug again. The last time was several months before his death, when we did not suspect he would be leaving us before we could get together again. I am very saddened by his death. I will remember him as the good person I knew him to be.My heartfelt condolences to the Monica family. Nancy Mar</title>

<title>Doug was such a quirky and warm guy. For years, I would go to his office in the MSOB, medical school office building at Stanford, for student registration advice, a quick Hawaiian fix, or for local politics. He is missed by this colleague, Sue Willows-Raznikov</title>

<title>I always knew Uncle Doug was involved in politics, but I am sure I never fully knew to what extent. When I started my journey to becoming a teacher, he gifted me with &quot;Pedagogy of Freedom-Ethics, Democracy, and Civic Courage&quot; by Paulo Freire. He knew that we needed teachers who brought change and wanted to make sure I had the tools to do so. He was always curious to know what the latest was regarding the classroom and we would have our updates when we saw one another during the holidays. </title>

One story shared was when my grandma got a call from his elementary school because he refused to participate in the Pledge of Allegiance. <title>Doug was an incredible student advocate during his many years of work at Stanford as our registrar. I can&#39;t count how many students he &quot;rescued&quot; by allowing them a second chance to change their schedules or complete their coursework. All students earned their degrees, but Doug gave them a second chance, where he could, as the School of Medicine&#39;s registrar. He helped so many medical students, quietly behind the scenes. We are grateful that he was part of the Stanford family. </title>

<title>Sp strange to speak about Doug in the past tense so soon after his passing. How unfair that he&#39;s gone! I&#39;ll forever remember his extraordinarily analytical approach to complex issues, and of course, his wry humor. Our many discussions around gnarly theoretical and practical questions were part of our long friendship. Doug was always right there... a true friend and comrade. </title>

<title>Doug thank you for being such a wonderful inspiration -- a model that showed us that being a revolutionary is really about kindness and compassion, an ability to laugh at ourselves, but most especially to hold tight onto our love for the people. Throughout the many twists and turns of your life, that was the beautiful consistency you demonstrated, for your family, your friends, and your comrades. And for that, and in all the ways that you love was reflected in your political work, we honor you -- our smiling, sardonic, and ever-kind brother.</title>
