In this chapter, we learn the story of Mrs. Breedlove, AKA Pauline. After Pauline and Cholly marry, she describes a major feeling of isolation and loneliness caused by her different class status from the other women. "Money became the focus of all their discussions... She wanted other women to cast favorable glances her way." (Morrison 118)

When Cholly and Pauline got married, they loved each other. They still do love each other, but differently. They used to have sex as an "activity" but it was not the main outlet as it now is. They were more present in each others lives and had more excitement. Now they are distant and live the same days over and over again. Pauline thinks about how her and her husband are growing apart even in sex. "But it ain't like that anymore. Most times he's thrashing away inside me before I'm woke, and through when I am. The rest of the time I can't even be next to his stinking drunk self."(Morrison 131)
Her and her husband's fading connection is what is represented here. Earlier in the novel we learn that they really only have sex to show they love each other and this just shows that even sex for them isn't special anymore.

However, as they wait, a little white blonde girl comes in looking for Polly, but Pecola accidentally spills a berry cobbler her mother made onto herself and the white girl.

As Claudia and Frieda walk past town to ask Pecola for whisky, they pass by the Lake Shore Park(the Lake Shore area was mostly made up of higher class, white families). The park was so beautiful and the girls have always wanted to play in such a serene, pure environment. However, “Black people were not...it filled [Claudia and Frieda’s] dreams” (Morrison 105). No child should feel that they are unwelcome and unworthy of participating in anything because of race. This detail puts in perspective the discrimination and injustice that took place during this time period and is a good reminder of the hardships that the African American community dealt with and how we still need to strive for justice and the removal of all forms of racism and discrimination in society.

When she saw us, fear danced across her face for a second. She looked
anxiously around the kitchen" (Morrison 108). The fear "danc[ing]" across her face most likely wasn't due to the fact that Mrs. Breedlove was nowhere to be found, but that she was white and there where three black girls in the kitchen that she had never seen before. The undertone of racism here is that the little girl's fear was due to their skin color, not that they were strangers.
