5 things you didn't know about riding bus in Curitiba

This curiosities are for you that never get a bus in our cloudy city, and want to get or need to get.

1. Everybody has already got the bus line “Inter 2”, at least once. Don’t confuse with “Interbairros II”, because is not the same thing. “Inter 2” stops at tube stations and terminals, while the “Interbairros II” stops at simple points in street. Both practicallyrun in same way, just some points change. Of course, as “Interbairros II”stops at simple points, its way is slower than “Inter 2”, so if you’re late, it’s better to get the “Inter 2”.

2. Although the Curitiba’s people are so kind, they prefer leave their manners out of the bus. For example, it seems nobody knows to say “excuse me”. For Curitiba’s living is funniest to avoid other people in the bus, and when they find someone they cannot avoid, they quietly say: “excuse me”. And this “excuse me” will never come with a smile.

3. Because of the last paragraph, you must be thinking: I’ll never get a bus in Curitiba. But the “excuse me problem” mustn’t scare you. Some months latter, you’ll be to getused to it. And you’ll find out a great number of people that will be able to help you if you have some problem, for example, you got lost. In this case, you must look for a old lady/gentleman, because they have more experience than young people, and you must ask her/him what the bus goes to the place you want to go.

4. Now, let’s suppose you’re late, probably it’s a thing that never happens with you, but this time happens, and you need to get the “Inter 2”. You arrives in Terminal, and then you see the “Inter 2” coming. Immediately, you put a smile on your face, but when the bus stops everybody go out its, its doors close, and it leave. So you ask yourself: “What it’s happening?”. In Curitiba we call this event “Recolhe”, that is when the bus driver’s day work finishes, and as the “Inter 2’s” way is circular, there’s not a beginning or ending, so it can go out of traffic in any Terminal. Ironically, it just happens when you’re late, so you need to get the first bus that arrives in Terminal, but the bus “Recolhe” and you stay in Terminal waiting for the next bus, and you get too much late. The recommendation here is not to get late!!!!

5. The buses painted red, they’re the “expressos” or “biarticulados”. In Curitiba we have 7 bus lines of its kind, as follows: “Santa Cândida/Capão Raso”, “Centenário/Campo Comprido”, “Centenário/ Rui Barbosa”, “Pinhais/Rui Barbosa”, “Pinheirinho”, “Circular Sul” and “Boqueirão”. You must think that all these buses are equal, but they’re just similar in their colors. The buses of line “Centenário/Campo Comprido” are more modern than the buses of other lines. That’s the true!!! While the line “Pinheirinho” has only 25% of its buses new, the line “Centenário/Campo Comprido” has practically 100% its buses new. The situation gets worse in line “Circular Sul”, that does not have buses new. And why all this inequality? I have no idea. It was to expect that the new buses were equality distributed in all the lines, but it doesn’t happen. So if you’ll get the bus line “Centenário/Campo Comprido”, you will have a modern bus waiting for you, but if not good lucky, ‘cause probably you’ll get a old bus.
