Effective work teams can be built begin with the right people. As a team leader, you have to know what you are looking for. When recruiting to the team, look for candidates who match the organizational culture. A group that works productively will suffer fewer turnovers because they have enjoyed success. Hence, look for people who will help to balance your team professionally. The second criteria to build effective work teams are be smart about goal settings. As a team leader, he or she must prepare the team for success with a clear objective, and be sure to attach a value to the goal. Without seeing the value in the work they are doing, a team will lack the motivation to succeed. Hence, as a team leader must make goal SMART which is specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time bound. Next, define roles clearly is one of the criteria in building effective work teams. Clearly defined roles make it easier for each team member to set their own goals for accomplishing work effectively and for making a strong contribution to the larger goal. It is important that each team member accept the role and responsibilities of their own role, and those of their counterparts. Besides that, build an atmosphere of cooperation. Efficient teams co-operate. In this environment, team goals are of utmost importance and team members support each other in working toward these goals. A member will be measured by their contribution to achievement. They have processes and protocols in place to promote co-operation. Lastly, define expectations. Performance expectations are basically the ‘Rules of Engagement’ for team work. They govern professional issues. As a team leader, he or she must be clear about what contributions are expected from individual team members, and consider presenting these expectations to each prospective member during their interview to help assure that they will be working on the same page. These expectations should be laid out in the organizational policies and procedures. In addition, team expectations should be concrete and directly related to the achievement of team goals. The team leader defines how a team will work to achieve their goals.

Below are four factors which may contribute to build effective work teams.
1. Agree on Goals
As a team members, we must together aim to achieve the team goals. We must clearly know what we must complete and how we complete it in order for us to achieve it within the time given. Therefore, all the team members MUST have the same goals and work together to achieve it.
2. Help Others
All the members in a team/group MUST help each other when someone is facing the trouble/difficulty. This may improve the teamwork spirit of a group and hence will enhance the effectiveness and efficiency of the group/team. In short, teamwork is come from helping each other and solve the problem together.
3. Give Feedback/Contribute Ideas
During the meeting or briefing of the group, every members in the group has the right and power to give his/her own opinion/idea for the discussion. This may improve the idea and bring extra benefit to the team. Every idea and feedback is valuable. We must speak it out and let others know it. If not, no one will know what you are thinking about.
4. Share Leadership
Even we are the leader of the team, we DON'T act like we are the best in the team. We can't work without our teammates. They are so important and valuable to us. We must share the leadership to them. We teach them, guide them, work with them. If we show the LEADER attitude to them, they may feel they are useless in the team and won't give cooperation to us. Therefore, we must have the mindset of everyone in the team is "leader". They have the right to speak, and give feedback. Tell your teammate "let's work together" instead of "You, complete it for me."

HOW TO BUILD EFFECTIVE WORK TEAMS

1. Agree on goals

Team members needs to develop individual and group goals. Urge them to set achievable and measurable short-term goals, as well as long term ones. The team members need to discuss among them to set a goal. After set goal, all the team members need to agree to the goal. Unnecessary argument, peer pressure and individual pride will help curb absenteeism, lateness and poor performance. Lastly, clear goal build effective work teams.
2. Contribute to idea

Encourage team members to share information and they own idea. Emphasize the importance of each team member's contribution and demonstrate how all of their jobs operate together to move the entire team closer to its goal.
3. Share leadership

By following shared leadership method managers perceive their team as performing more innovative and proactive behaviors. The team members perceive they are implementing higher quality problem-solving. The clients rate teams with whom they interact as more effective. Additionally, shared leadership is a better predictor of team results and success than when one leader alone influences all other team members. To successfully develop the share leadership need some team members who will claim leadership and are willing to influence the team and the manager, individual team members, and the team as a whole to be willing to grant leadership to different members.
4. Follow procedures

Set ground rules for the team. These are the norms that you and the team establish to ensure efficiency and success. They can be simple directives (Team members are to be punctual for meetings) or general guidelines (Every team member has the right to offer ideas and suggestions), but they need to make sure that the team creates these ground rules by consensus and commits to them, both as a group and as individuals.
5. Check understanding
Understanding each other’s duties and deadline helps people work collaboratively. Encourage the team to define the division of labor themselves. They will take on more responsibility if they are in control and someone may even offer a previously untapped talent.

Five steps to building a productive and effective team are:

Step 1: Establish leadership.

If your employees trust your judgement, they will work effectively even when you’re not around. Before you can start team building, you need to develop the right kind of leadership skills. This doesn’t mean asserting authority, instead try to foster trust through honesty and transparency. Especially in larger organizations, managers can’t be everywhere at once, but if your employees trust your judgements they will work effectively even when you’re not around.

Step 2: Establish relationships with each of your employees.

Try to learn more about each member of your team, their skill sets, how they are motivated and their likes and dislikes. Instead of delegating tasks, give your team’s open-ended projects and allow them to determine the best solution. This will encourage them to cooperate and develop problem solving skills.

Step 3: Build relationships between your employees.

As your team starts to cooperate more, examine the way they work together and take steps to improve communication, cooperation and trust amongst the team. If there are any conflicts, try to resolve them amicably. Listen to both sides of the argument and act as a mediator. One way to do this is to brainstorm solutions, which helps to empower your employees and may lead to new solutions to the problem.

Step 4: Foster teamwork.

Once you have established relations with and between your employees, it’s time to help them work together effectively. It isn’t something that can be achieved in a short time and then forgotten. It is an ongoing organic process that you a will have to facilitate and guide. As this process unfolds, however, your team members will begin to trust and support one another and share their skill sets and effort in order to more effectively complete your organisation’s goals.
