Hi everyone, I am Penny and I work in Kalgoorlie at the Eastern Goldfields Education Support Centre.
We cater for students with an intellectual disability or those on the autistic spectrum who need special educational requirements. I teach a class that ranges from year 10 through to year 13, as our students are sometimes able to attend for an extra year to assist their retention of educational knowledge.
I am also lucky enough to be our school's transition coordinator, helping students prepare for life after school, and the work placement coordinator, arranging for students to have practical experience in the work place. Along with these roles, I am the school ASDAN coordinator, and the Duke of Edinburgh coordinator. I am looking forward to learning more about school leadership. I came to teaching late in my career, after working as everything from a nurse and counselor to owning and running an engineering company. I am currently in my fourth year of teaching. Out of school, I live with a demanding cat, after leaving my grown daughters in Perth. One daughter is working in childcare, and the other is a marine biologist.

Hello everyone, my name is Natalie. I am currently teaching Year 3/4 at Lake Grace DHS. This is my 10th year teaching and I am back where I not only went to school as a child, but started my teaching career. I have taught at a few different schools, mostly in the early years, throughout the Wheatbelt. I started at Lake Grace then spent a year at Meckering PS, then on to Dowerin DHS for 5 years, a semester last year at Pingrup and then made my way back home this year to Lake Grace. On returning to Lake Grace DHS I have been given a few lead roles, but in particular Numeracy. I enjoy sharing some of my practises with my colleagues, encouraging and supporting them to excel as teachers. I too have recently got married and my husband and I have purchased our first home. I love being back in Lake Grace with my family, especially with my nephew and niece. I like weekends away exploring new places, enjoying good food and good coffee. I look forward to being a part of this online course with this group of professionals, to further my knowledge as a teacher and gain some valuable tools to become an effective leader.

Hi everyone and welcome to the program. My name is Su Wilson and I will be your Explore Course Facilitator.

Thank you for taking the time to share information about yourself. I love your photos and reading about your respective roles. I am really looking forward to learning more about you, your interests and experiences as we work together over the course of the program.

My journey in education began nearly 40 years ago and I am still learning. I have worked both in metropolitan and regional schools, including eighteen years in roles of school leadership. Always looking for a challenge, I have also supported schools across the state in curriculum implementation, school libraries and digital technologies/ICT.

I have been Principal of four public primary schools, the last of which was Rosalie PS, where I had the privilege of leading implementation of the Independent Public School initiative, before retiring from the role following our review in 2013.

One thing you may find later in your career is that leaving education is never easy, so my enthusiasm in working with school leaders led to my work in co-writing and co-facilitating a program in Leading School Improvement, training in excess of 800 school leaders on behalf of the Leadership Institute.

I have also, until recently, had the pleasure of seeing the good work of schools as an Independent School Reviewer and currently work with school leadership teams as a Coach/Mentor through the Fogarty EDvance program.

I am married with four children, the youngest of which is a son (recently turned 20 but looks and acts 16!) who presents me with challenges of a different kind, as well as three beautiful grandchildren.

I am delighted to be a part of the Explore program and look forward to catching up face-to-face through our weekly Webex sessions.

If you have any questions, please be sure to contact me at susan.wilson3@education.wa.edu.au

I graduated in WA but began my teaching career overseas in London for three years before returning to Perth and working at Mt Hawthorn Primary in years, 4, 5, 6 & 7. I gained my Level 3 status whilst working at Mt Hawthorn and my area of interest was Technology and Enterprise. From Mt Hawthorn I went to Koorana as a Deputy Principal for 6 months before winning a permanent Deputy position at Ranford Primary. I have been at Ranford for 8 years and have been privileged to be part of dynamic administration team mentored by a highly experienced Principal. I now believe I have a balance between home and work life which has inspired me to look further into the role of leadership with the prospect of one day, becoming a Principal. I have no doubt that being part of this online course will be a great springboard for professional dialogue and learning.

Hi everyone. I have loved reading everyone's posts and am so excited to get started on this course! I love meeting new people and extending myself wherever possible.
My name is Jodi. I am currently teaching a year 2/3 class at Karratha Primary School. I originally grew up in Karratha and attended Karratha Primary school myself, so I love being back. I am new to Karratha Primary school this year, after spending the last 8 years in Fitzroy Crossing, up in the Kimberly's WA. Fitzroy is a beautiful remote Aboriginal town with a gorgeous river full of barramundi. I am a mother of 2 young boys and my husband was more than happy to stay home with them during our time in Fitzroy so he could go fishing wherever possible.
My time up North has instilled a passion in Aboriginal education, and following my experience there, I am also interested in supporting students who are having trouble engaging in their schooling. I cant wait to get to know everyone and become more confident in my professional dialogue (which I know could use some work). Bye for now. Jodi

Hi everyone. My name is Kelly and I have worked in the south west region since I started teaching back in 1996. I started my career in Harvey, working at the Ag College and the "town campus" as the senior high school was known then. I think starting in a smaller school gave me a great head start in leadership as there were opportunities available that just aren't in a school with a large staff. I also had a female principal who was a fantastic role model for me and a female Head of Learning Area in English. I was surrounded by women who were leaders, so it never occurred to me that I shouldn't be a leader too. I moved further south and began working in the Bunbury region. I have worked at four senior high schools as far south as Busselton. I moved into Student Services roles early in my career and then into executive roles in the last four years. After a lengthy time teaching English at Bunbury SHS, and then moving around the SW taking promotional positions, I won a Deputy Principal job back at Bunbury SHS at the start of 2017. My role is focused on academic performance, specifically ensuring the quality of our specialist programs in our schools (gifted and talented, elite sports and visual arts) as well as the monitoring and support of our Year 11 and 12 ATAR pathway students. I also oversee the transition of Year 10 students into senior school. I enjoy working with the executive team on key improvement initiatives - one of the main ones that I am currently leading is improving instructional practices based on PD presented by Barrie Bennett (10 day PD over a two year period).
I am also a mum of three and my husband is also a teacher. He works part time and deals with the school run and cooks dinner etc. I don't think I could work the hours that I do without his support. My goal in participating in this course is to continue working on my leadership skills so that when I finally win a Principal position I will be the best Principal I can be.

Hi Everyone, my name is Amanda Flood. I'm in my 10th year of teaching having taught K-12 in metro and remote schools around the state. The past 5 years I have ventured into Education Support where I worked at a small senior high school in Mandurah. This allowed me to have some great leadership opportunities and develop an amazing team that supported me through my studies to get my Masters in SEN and my Level 3 Classroom Teacher status. These ladies are some of the most amazing mentors I could have in my corner. This year I have moved to a larger mainstream school and I have been appointed the Learning Support Coordinator role (a new role) working within the student support team to help manage over 1700 students both in mainstream and alternative programs. I'm enjoying this challenge and it has spurred on my interest in hopefully gaining a position in leadership. I am looking forward to completing this course alongside everyone :) Hope you all enjoy the rest of your holidays :)

Hi all, my name is Nicole and I'm really looking forward to embarking on this journey with you.

I live in a little mining town called Leinster, 3.5 hours north of Kalgoorlie. I am currently teaching at Leinster Community School in a grade 2/3 class. I have been teaching for around 10 years having just returned to the classroom full time after having children. I completed my degree in Queensland and have worked in a few different schools around Australia as well as working in Singapore. I am currently the literacy leader in my school and desire to enhance my leadership capacity.

On a personal level, I’ve been married for 9 years and have 3 boys, my eldest is 6 and I have 3 year old twins. In my (very limited) spare time I enjoy reading and travelling- in fact, I’ve just returned from a holiday to Malaysia (which was far too short).

Hi Everyone, I'm Mishayla and it's nice to meet you all.
I have been at Cyril Jackson Senior Campus since 2011 and have had various roles within the school. I'm currently a Level 3 Classroom Teacher and run mentorship for teachers aiming for this, TIC EAL/D, Student Services Coordinator for the Intensive English Centre and generally the person everyone comes to when there's a problem - I'm pretty busy!
Our Campus is really interesting; we have students from more than 20 countries in the Intensive English Centre and 99% of these move to our mainstream Year 11 and 12 courses after graduation. Our upper school courses take students of any age and we also have specialist programs for disengaged youth. My main passion here is not only teaching but also helping newly-arrived migrants from myriad backgrounds find their feet in their new country. Being a voice for our many disenfranchised students, and helping them find theirs, is an amazing honour. As an EAL/D specialist, I am also involved with SCSA and WATESOL at a number of levels.
I'm doing this course because I'm hoping to take on an Deputy position in the future. I support 12 EAL/D teachers in my TIC role and would like to develop further skills in leadership.
Personally, I have been with my partner for nearly 18 years and we have two gorgeous boys aged 6 and 12 as well as a completely bonkers rescue dog. We travel a lot, really a lot, and love to explore.
I'm really looking forward to whatever this course brings.

So exciting to read all of the introductions and see so much enthusiasm.

I am currently teaching in a Year One classroom at Tuart Forest PS in Dalyellup, Bunbury. I have been teaching for over 15 years without permanency as we lived a transient life. This means that I haven't stayed in one school for more than three years and I have taught all specialist areas, as well as all years from 1 - 7, and even year 10. I have taught in the Pilbara, metro area and Wheatbelt, before moving to the Southwest area, where I have settled on 5.5 acres with my gorgeous daughter (15 years), my wonderful partner and our entourage of pets.

My passion in education has been career long as I love working with the children and families of children on the Autism Spectrum, as well as those children who struggle with literacy. Despite my transience, I have been blessed with roles such as SAER co-coordinator and LSC.

I decided to take this course in an attempt to move to a Deputy position in the future, especially in a specialist ASD coordinator role, or even Principal in a small, rural school.

I'm Craig and I'm excited about working alongside you all and learning from each other as we explore our leaderhip pathways.

I've just had a whirlwind few weeks from being on my mid-year roadtrip up to Kununurra to being appointed as Principal in the Wheatbelt - all with the joys of intermittent access to mobile reception.

I was based at Comet Bay PS in Secret Harbour for the last 11 years (foundation staff which was an amazing opportunity), predominatly as a Phys Ed. specialist. At the end of 2017 I started to explore my leadership options before taking a 12 month position at Tom Price PS as Health and PE specialist with opportunities in leadership positions. That position was cut short with the acting Principal position at Beacon PS being offered to me through the Level 3 pool - so here I am... in the Wheatbelt after a mad scramble to get back to Tom Price from the Kimberley, pack and relocate all within a week.

Personally, I enjoy sports (of course being a PE specialist), travelling (as you no doubt already picked up) and have just started to dabble with the acoustic guitar.

I'm excited to have this opportunity at Beacon and even more keen to participate in this learning experience with you all.

Hi all, my name is Cathy and I’m excited to be apart of this dynamic learning opportunity.

I am in my 8th year of teaching. I started off receiving a scholarship whilst studying my Dip Ed which guaranteed me a teaching position for 2 years in the country. I was blessed to get Wongan Hill DHS as my posting and I ended up staying there for 4 years. Whilst there I was mainly upper primary based but ended up with my final year being high school maths. Working in the country gave me so many challenges and learning opportunities. I left Wongan Hills to do a year of relief teaching in Perth. This varied from Kindy to Year 12. I then went travelling for 9 months and volunteer taught in a remote school in Guatemala and later being apary of a teacher training program in Uganda. Wow there were amazing and eye opening experiences. Upon my return to Perth I landed a job at Yanchep Beach Primary School, where I have been for the past 3 years.

I am hoping to start to think about the next step in my teaching journey. The idea of leadership sounds daunting but incredibly exciting. I am hoping to learn about what it takes to be an inspirational leader and about the behind the scenes stuff that classroom teachers do not really get to see!

Other than traveling being a passion. So is sport. I’ve just finished playing AFL this evening where we lost by 2 points, with a goal being scored against us in the last 30 seconds of the game.
