I was born into slavery. I ran away from my owner when I was 9 with my mom and older sister. Years later, I saw a poster nailed into a wood post that said the union army would now be excepting African Americans as soldiers. I joined the union because I hated slavery and wanted to abolish it. I trained in Camp Meigs in Readville.

Life was hard as a soldier. We were given very little food and we got very little sleep. I got very homesick at times and wanted to quit. But I was committed to ending slavery. Our blue uniforms were also very heavy and hot. Sometimes on the battle fields the weather would be as hot as 100 degrees Fahrenheit. being African American I got less pay. Earning only $10 a month, while white soldiers earned $13 per month.

On July 18th, I was ordered to assault Fort Wagner 30-foot high earth and sand filled walls protected 14 heavy artillery pieces. I was with the 54th Massachusetts Infantry. We captured the outer rifle pits surrounding the fort. I thought this plan might actually work. I heard the unit’s colonel, Robert Gould Shaw, was killed. which had discouraged me. with nine other regiments, we crossed over two bridges and scaled parapet as the we entered. We had brutal hand to hand combat. I started unconvinced of victory, they resorted to land and sea siege operations to reduce the fort. The Confederates abandoned Fort Wagner on September 7, 1863
