I asked myself 'How can I create the experience of tasting Pho, a traditional Vietnamese soup, into a visual form?' This led me to explore the intricate balance of ingredients that make Pho not just food, but an experience.

‘Bowl of Pho’ draws heavily on the vibrant street food scene of Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam, where Pho is eaten and celebrated. The sculpture includes motifs such as the national flower, the lotus to symbolise the strength and resilience of the Vietnamese people.

If you look closely you’ll see the delicate strands of clay shaped to mimic flat rice noodles, the rougher textures representing slices of beef, and tiny, intricately crafted clay herbs. Each element is added to represent the way Pho is traditionally served.

The primary challenge in this project was the medium itself. Air-dry clay presents limitations in detail and texture, making it difficult to fully capture the small details of the pho. However, this constraint pushed me to focus on the sculpture's emotional impact—how to convey resilience and strength through the National symbols of Vietnam.

To conclude, ‘Bowl of Pho’ is my tribute to the cultural heritage and culinary appreciation of Vietnam. It's an invitation to explore the stories and traditions that are poured into every bowl of Pho. How does this sculpture inspire you to think about the stories behind your favourite dishes?"
