The story is represented the first person by number 4, who's new name is John Smith. He and his guardian, Henri, has been on the run from the Mogadorians, their enemies since he was four years old. They are hunting his race in order, he is number 4. After number three dies, John Smith moves to Paradise Ohio where he hides meets Sarah Hart and Sam Goode, who he hides his true identity too. Sarah being his crush and Sam being his nerdy, conspiracy loving friend. John starts acquiring powers called Legacies. Legacies are powers only some people from his planet can get, his first legacy is to create light out of his hands and he is also immune to fire. Life seems to be running smoothly and John really starts liking Paradise. However, all good things must come to an end, Henri found out about an alien conspiracy article about the mogadorians. He wants to know more about them and to see if the mogadorians are closer to finding them. Henri decides to go check out the publishers without John. Henri was supposed to be back for dinner but never showed so John and Sam headed out to find him. They find him in the publisher's basement tied up, to then be ambushed by the publishers who are attacking them for the mogadorians. They escape and get back to paradise, but not before Sam finds out that John is an alien. Henri starts packing up to move, but John wants to stay so he threatens. Eventually, the mogadorians catch up to them and they battle by the high school. Number six comes and helps John out too. They are badly outnumbered but they fought valiantly and won.They won that battle, but the war is not over.
