Why is Bathers Beach Important to Our community?

Bathers beach is a very important part of the Fremantle community. Not only is it an popular tourist attraction, filled with lots of yummy restaurants and home of some of Fremantle's amazing art exhibitions. It also has a lot of important history behind it. To Aboriginal people this area is known as Manjaree. Hundreds of years ago, before English settlers came, Manjaree was used as a meeting place by the Aboringinal people. Manjaree was a place of trade, where families and tribes would gather for kinship and in-law making. This was also a place where young women and men, who have come of age, would meet their future husbands/wives.

Bathers beach is mainly used as a tourist attraction for people from all over the world who visit Fremantle and want to see our beautiful beaches. There are also buildings around Bathers Beach such as the J Shed, Roundhouse Studios, Arthur Heads Heritage Site and Kidogo Arthouse, that have been utilised as art exhibits. At these art exhibitions you can meet the artist, watch them work, and even take part in a number of workshops.

What Remains of Bathers Beach Today and What We Think it will be like in 50 Years Time..

Bathers Beach itself has not changed very much over time because it is a beach. However, there are many buildings around it that have changed since it was formally known by Indigenous people as Manjaree. These buildings have been used for lots of things especially art exhibitions and community events. We think that in 50 years time they might build more restaurants for people to eat at because people like to eat dinner while looking at pretty views. We also think there will be more sculptures and art around and at Bathers Beach because there are a lot of artists that work in the buildings around Bathers Beach. We think they should do something like Sculptures By The Sea like what they do on Cottesloe Beach so it can bring more tourists and so the artists can show off more of their work.

What Bathers Beach Once Looked Like

According to this image Bathers Beach once looked a lot like the Parkers Point Coast at Rottnest. Originally, Bathers Beach was a strip of sand at the base with rock patches and sand ridges covered with bushes. Today, we have restored most of the vegetation that was once there and the area is being conserved to its natural state.

You can Walk to Bathers Beach from our school. If you walk out of the school gates and turn left down Henry Street, Then take a right onto High Street. Walk down High Street until you get to Cliff Street then turn left. Walk down Cliff Street until you get to Crooke Lane (Not Crooke Street). Turn right down Crooke Lane and follow it around until you see a path that will let you walk over the train tracks. when you have walked over the train tracks you will be able to walk through a sandy path through the bushes and you will find Bathers Beach. There are lots of ways to get to Bathers Beach but we think this is the easiest way.
