Bacterial vaginosis (commonly known as BV) is the most common vaginal infection in women of childbearing age. It's caused by an imbalance in the bacteria that live in your vagina. About 1 in 5 women have this infection at some point during pregnancy, though estimates vary widely.

Studies have shown that woman with BV are likely to have a low weight baby, a few other studies have also shown that it is linked with second-trimester miscarriage. Alot of women with BV end up delivering their baby prematurly however, dcotors are unsure of how or why these two things link. Most women with BV do have a normal pregnancy and BV normally resolves itself. You are more suceptical to sexual transmitted infections(STI's). BV can cause discharge to smell and make it painful when urinating, it is most common after sex.

Symptoms•Thin grayish-white discharge•Pain during urination•Itching around the vagina Treatment BV sometimes goes away on its own. If you are in your first trimester, your doctor may wait to treat it until your second trimester. A course of antibiotics, usually Metronidazole or Clindamycin, generally does the trick. Prevention•Never sit around in a wet bathing suit or sweaty panties; always put on a clean pair of cotton underwear after you're finished swimming or working out.•Wear comfortable, cotton underwear that will allow air to circulate. Avoid tight pants, which can cause bacteria-inducing sweat.•Sleep without underwear--this can reduce your risk of infections.•Wipe front to back when you go to the bathroom. This will keep bacteria spreading from your anus to your vagina.•Skip bath oils -- they can trap bacteria.(http://www.parents.com/pregnancy/my-body/aches-pains/pregnancy-vaginal-discharge-infections/)
