Song: Life is a Highway- Rascal Flatts

Why: The first chapter of Lord Of The Flies is about Ralph and Piggy essentially exploring a little bit of the island and finding out what happened to them and how to deal with their situation. On page 14, it states, “‘We got to find the others. We got to do something.’” On page 16 it states, '"We can use this to call the others. Have a meeting. They'll come when they hear us---'" On page 21 it states, "'Then we'll have to look after ourselves.' Secure on the other side of Ralph, Piggy spoke timidly.
'That's why Ralph mad a meeting. So we can decide what to do.'" In all of these quotes, the boys are trying find out how to deal with these unexpected circumstances that they are in. In an interview, Cochrane (Rascal Flatts) said, “It became a pep talk to myself ... saying you can’t really control all of this stuff, you just do the best you can.” This interview was about the meaning behind the song. Also in the song it states,

“There's no load I can't hold

A road so rough this I know

I'll be there when the light comes in

Tell 'em we're survivors.” In the song it mentions being survivors which is what the boys are trying to do on the island. Both are about exploring things in life and making the best of the situation you’re in which is what the boys try and do on the island in chapter 1.

Song: Thriller- Michael Jackson

Why: In the second chapter of Lord Of The Flies, the idea of the “beastie” is introduced by the young boy with a mulberry-colored birthmark on his face. This causes the other little boys to have night terrors. Also, the older boys dismiss this idea of the “beastie” as only a nightmare that the little boy had. On page 36 it states, “‘He still says he saw the beastie. It came and went away again an’ came back and wanted to eat him---’

‘He was dreaming.’” On page 36 it also states, "'He must have had a nightmare. Stumbling about among all those creepers.'" The song thriller is about nightmares and a beast in the night. In the song it states,

“'Cause this is thriller

Thriller night

And no one’s gonna save you

From the beast about to strike” On page 36 it states, "'He says in the morning it turned into them things like ropes in the trees and hung in the branches. He says will it come back tonight?'"Both the song and the chapter have to do with nightmares and both mention a beast.

Song: 9 to 5- Dolly Parton

Why: In chapter three, Ralph complains about doing all the work when building the huts and how the “littluns” aren’t helping. Ralph, Simon, and Piggy are working really hard on the huts while the children play. On page 50 it states, "'And they keep running off. You remember the meeting? How everyone was going to work hard until the shelters were finished?'" On page 50 it also states, “‘They’re hopeless. The older ones aren’t much better. D’you see? All day I’ve been working with Simon. No one else. They’re off bathing, or eating, or playing.” On page 51 it states "'I bet if I blew the conch this minute, they'd come running. Then we'd be, you know, very solemn, and someone would say we ought to build a jet, or a submarine, or a TV set. When the meeting was over they'd work for five minutes, then wander off or go hunting.'" Ralph talks a lot about how much work he and a few others are doing and how little the "littluns" are doing on the island. In the song, Dolly Parton talks about working hard and not getting enough credit. It also talks about how it can make you go crazy which reminds me of Ralph’s response when the huts keep falling down. In the song it states,

"Working 9 to 5

What a way to make a living

Barely gettin' by

It's all taking

And no giving

They just use your mind

And they never give you credit

It's enough to drive you

Crazy if you let it”

Both talk about working hard and it not paying off as much as it should.

Song: Don’t Ya Wish You Were Us- Lemonade Mouth the movie

Why: In chapter four, Jack and his hunters kill their first pig and they feeling very cocky about it. So cocky in fact, that they do not even care that they let the signal fire go out. Ralph is very upset about this. On page 69 it states, “Jack checked, vaguely irritated by this irrelevance but too happy to let it worry him.

‘We can light the fire again. You should have been with us, Ralph. We had a smashing time.'” On page 74 it states, "All the boys were talking at once, relieved and excited." On page 75 it states, "The twins, still sharing their identical grin, jumped up and ran around each other. Then the rest joined in, making pig-dying noises and shouting." In the song, the band is bragging about being better than other people and how people wish they were as good as them and could do the things they can. This is like Jack and his hunters bragging about the pig they killed and their hunting skills. In the song it states,

“Hey what, don't you wish you were us?

Hey what, don't you wish you could rock?

You're M.I.A. we're V.I.P.

You're L.O.L. we're B.I.G.

No one really likes you that much

Don't you wish you were us?

Yeah, don't you wish you were us?”

Also, in this scene, the band is trying to prove that they are better than others just like Jack is bragging about being the best at hunting.

Song: From Now On- The Greatest Showman the movie

Why: In chapter five, Ralph constantly has to remind the boys what the original plan was and what they need to do to get off the island. On page 79 it states, "'We need an assembly. Not for fun. Not for laughing and falling off the log... not for making jokes or for... for cleverness. Not for these things. But to put things straight." On page 79 it also states, "'We have lots of assemblies. Everybody enjoys speaking and being together. We decide things. But they don't get done.'" This is Ralph sort of trying to collect his thoughts and not only remind the others, but remind himself of the main focus of getting rescued. He had just come back from walking alone and thinking about all of this. On page 81 it states, “‘Look at us! How many are we? And yet we can’t keep a fire going to make smoke. Don’t you understand? Can’t you see we ought to---ought to die before we let the fire out?’” At this assembly, Ralph is reminding the boys of all the rules and the importance of the signal fire and the reason they have it. In the song, he is singing about losing sight of the original plan and being blinded by other things in life. He is saying that from that point on, he needed to follow the original plan and not get distracted, just like the boys on the island. In the song it states,

“From now on

These eyes will not be blinded by the lights

From now on

What's waited till tomorrow starts tonight

Tonight

Let this promise in me start

Like an anthem in my heart

From now on

From now on”

Ralph is trying to convince the boys that they need to follow the original rules and plan to get off the island and in the song, he is realizing that he needs to do the same thing.

Song: Hallucinations- DVSN

Why: In chapter 6, Sam and Eric see the man in the parachute and mistake it for the beast. They then run and tell the other boys that they saw the “beastie” and they lie about what happened with it. They tell the boys that the “beastie” attacked them. In the book it states, "We've seen the beast with our own eyes. No--we weren't asleep--". Also in the book it states, “It was furry. There was something moving behind its head--wings. The beast moved too--"

The boys think the man is the beast which is kind of like a hallucination that they have which is why it relates to the song. In the book it states, “Simon, walking in front of Ralph, felt a flicker of incredulity--a beast with claws that scratched, that sat on a mountain-top, that left no tracks and yet was not fast enough to catch Samneric. However Simon thought of the beast, there rose before his inward sight the picture of a human at once heroic and sick.” In the song it states,

“Having hallucinations
I'm losing sleep every night
Keep trying to cover my eyes
My eyes, yeah
Is it my imagination?
I think I'm losing my mind
Still see your face all the time
All the time”
In the song and the chapter, it talks about losing sleep because of hallucinations which is what happens with the littluns, Sam, and Eric.

Song: Whatever it Takes- Imagine Dragons

Why: In chapter 7, the hunters find a pig and kill it and this process is very exhilarating for Ralph, which almost makes him lose control. Ralph is very proud of himself when he hits the pig with his spear for the first time. Also, later that night, the boys get a little carried away with reenacting the killing and almost kill Roger. On page 113 it states, “Ralph talked on, excitedly.

‘I hit him alright. The spear stuck in. I wounded him!’” On page 114 it states, "They got his arms and legs. Ralph, carried away by a sudden thick excitement, grabbed Eric's spear and jabbed at Robert with it." On page 115 it states, "The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering." In the song it talks about doing whatever it takes and having a lot of adrenaline which describes how the boys were feeling during their chase with the pig. In the song it states,

“Whatever it takes

'Cause I love the adrenaline in my veins

I do whatever it takes

'Cause I love how it feels when I break the chains

Whatever it takes

You take me to the top I'm ready for

Whatever it takes

'Cause I love the adrenaline in my veins

I do what it takes”

This song can also relate to Ralph’s feelings right before he threw the spear and how he had to do whatever is took to bring down the pig.

Song: Feed the Beast- Arizona

Why: In chapter eight, Jack and his hunters brutally kill another pig and place its head on a spear as an offering to the beast. This ends up causing Simon to hallucinate and in the end of the chapter, faint. On page 133 it states, “‘And about the beast. When we kill we’ll leave some of the kill for it. Then it won’t bother us, maybe.’” On page 136-137 it states, "Jack held up the head and jammed the soft throat down on the point end of the stick which pierced through into the mouth. He stood back and the head hung there, a little blood dribbling down the stick." On page 137 it states, "'This head is for the beast. It's a gift.'" In the song, it talks about feeding the beast which is essentially what the hunters are trying to do with the pig’s head. It also talks about making your heart beat which I relate to the excitement the boys have when killing the pig. In the song it states,

“Oh make my heart beat, beat

Come on and feed the beast

Make my heart beat, beat

Come on and feed the beast

Make my heart beat, oh oh

Come on and feed the beast

Cause I need no sleep, no sleep

So come on and feed the beast”

In the song, it also talks about looking for this beast just like the boys are.

Song: Kill the Beast- Beauty and the Beast the musical/movie

Why: In chapter nine, the boys get very riled up and in the end, unfortunately kill Simon. During this chapter, the boys are chanting about killing the beast just like the villagers are singing about it in the song. On page 151-152 it states, "Roger became the pig, grunting and charging at Jack, who sidestepped. The hunters took their spears, the cooks took spits, and the rest clubs of firewood. A circling movement developed and a chant. While Roger mimed the terror of the pig, the littluns ran and jumped on the outside of the circle. On page 152 it states, “The chant rose a tone in agony.

‘Kill the beast! Cut his throat! Spill his blood!’” Every time the boys chant, the thunder gets louder and so do they. As they chant, this anger builds and builds until they kill an innocent boy as a result. On page 153 it states, "Then the clouds opened and let down the rain like a waterfall. The water bounded from the mountaintop, tore leaves and branches from the trees, poured like a cold shower over he struggling heap on the sand." In both the song and the chapter, a thunder storm is going on and this adds to the suspense and anger in the events leading up to the final battle. In the song, the villagers are chanting and singing as they march to the castle to kill the beast. In the song and in the chapter, the volume and anger build as it goes on. In the song it states

“Through the mist, through the woods

Through the darkness and the shadows

It's a nightmare, but it's one exciting ride

Say a prayer, then we're there

At the drawbridge of a castle

And there's something truly terrible inside

It's a beast he's got fangs, razor sharp ones

Massive paws, killer claws for the feast

Hear him roar, see him foam

But we're not coming home 'til he's dead

Good and dead

Kill the Beast!”

Song: Outcast- NF

Why: In this chapter, almost all of the boys have joined Jack’s tribe and Ralph’s tribe is very weak. This song talks about being the odd ones out and being the outcasts which is basically what Ralph’s tribe is at this point. On page 158 it states, “‘We’ll live on our own, the four of us—‘“ On page 162 it states,"He looked round guiltily at the three boys standing by." Throughout this time in the book, Ralph's tribe gets smaller and smaller because of Jack's tribe tempting them and because they torture them. In the song, NF talks about being the outcast and not being in with the popular type crown which is kind of what Jack’s tribe is to the littluns. In the song it states,

“They laughin', they tell me I'll never get out
I'm just tryna be me, I am nobody else
I don't care what you think, I'm just bein' myself
So I guess for now
I'll just be the outcast
I'll just be the outcast
I'll just be the outcast
I guess I'll be the outcast”

Song: Losing Hope- Jack Johnson

Why: In chapter 11, Ralph is starting to lose a lot of his hope of getting rescued. Piggy can no longer light the fire without his glasses and they are starting to give up. On page 169 it states, “The twins watched anxiously and Piggy sat expressionless behind the luminous wall of his myopia.” On page 170 it states, "'Are we savages or what? Only now there's no signal going up." On page 174 it states, "They passed the place where the tribe had danced. The charred sticks still lay on the rocks where the rain had quenched them but the sand by the water was smooth again." In the song Jack Johnson talks about losing hope and not wanting to try. Also in this chapter, Piggy is still upset about Simon’s death and in the song it talks about losing a friend. In the song it states,

“Losing hope is easy
When your only friend is gone
And every time you look around
Well, it all, it all just seems to change”

Song: Bellyache- Billie Eilish

Why: In chapter 12, Jack’s tribe kills Piggy and attempts to kill Ralph. At the very end, they are rescued and when the captain asks them what they were doing on the island, Ralph realizes the evil in man and in them. They all kind of come to realize what they have actually done. On page 202 it states, “He have himself up to them now for the first time on the island; great, shuddering spasms of grief that seemed to wrench his whole body.”On age 202 it also states, "Ralph looked at him dumbly. For a moment he had a fleeting picture of the strange glamour that had once invested the beaches." In the song, Billie talks about killing people for revenge and expecting it to feel good, but it doesn’t. This also relates to the chapter because Jack tries to kill Ralph and doesn’t accomplish what he thought he would. In the song it states,

“I lost my mind
I don't mind
Where's my mind
Where's my mind
Maybe it's in the gutter where I left my lover
What an expensive fate
My V is for Vendetta
Thought that I'd feel better
But now I got a bellyache”

In the song it also talks about losing her mind which the boys have kind of done by the end of the book. On page 202 it states,"He turned away to give them time to pull themselves together; and waited, allowing his eyes to rest on the trim cruiser in the distance."
