"According to Gerald Fishkin, a California-based psychologist and author of The Science of Shame, the experience of shame is connected with the limbic system." Shame is our bodies response to certain situations. It is a raw reaction, and our body has practically no control over it. Our bodies first instinct is to self-protect, and in doing so, it causes a long-term biological change. This connects to Chapter 15, because Hawthorne describes what the shame of the scarlet letter is like for Hester Prynne. Whenever she passes people on the road, her first instinct is to cover the letter, and to look downcast. In the book, you can definitely see #2 and #3.  In Chapter 15, the author reveals that Hester doesn't express emotions often. It can have long-time psychological effects that can damage a persons mental health, but also physical health and career. After being publicly shamed, many people went into a form of depression, or even had signs of PTSD. You can see signs of this in Hester.
