Around 1521 the Europeans brought multiple diseases to the Americas. These diseases were very severe, especially because at the time medication wasn’t the best. The article states that, Europeans exploring and settling North America in the 16th and 17th centuries brought smallpox, measles and influenza, diseases usually associated with domesticated livestock." (classroom) This led to the death of many Native Americans. This connects to Asian Immigration because in the past two years Covid had made its way to America and since the disease came from asia, many Asian Americans had been discriminated against.

Information Gathered from Classroom

I think the most important takeaway for this article is that the Europeans are taking away Native American culture and what they have built. This ties back to Asian immigration because in America, Asians are forced to adapt to a whole new society which consists of different religions, cultures and more. We see a common theme in America which is converting minorities to new cultures in religion instead of embracing their own.

People today invade Asian American culture just as the colonizers did to the Native Americans long ago. For a long time people haven’t acknowledged what the Native Americans have done and have used insensitive photos as team logos, images and more. However, currently we are seeing change. NFL teams like the Redskins changed their logo, let alone changed their name. Along with that they even changed their name. People are also pushing to change Columbus day to indigeonous peoples day. This is great but I still noticed that this has yet to happen for Asian Americans. People still make racist comments, stereotype, and use silly images of Asian Americans. The worst part is sometimes they don’t even know what they are doing is racist. People like to be silly by talking like an asian immigrant which is really awful. Hopefully, one day this will change.

Throughout the year 1890 U.S forces were worried that the influence of the Ghost Dance spiritual movement in Pine Ridge was increasing. The Ghost Dance was a spiritual movement among Native Americans with religious visions. These visions foresaw renewal of the Earth and help for the Paiute peoples as promised by their ancestors. Many Siox believed that if they did the virtual long enough the gods would see this action and kill any non-believer, non Native Americans. On December 15, 1980, U.S police attempted to arrest Sitting Bull, a famous Siox Chief. They mistook him for a Ghost dancer and killed him in the process.

Information gathered from History.

This connects to the theme we have been seeing which is Americans overwriting cultures which belong to Minorities. Now maybe it wasn't to this extent, but Asian immigrants still face this to this day. Asian Americans have faced assimilation the most in this country. Asians have been forced to change religion and identity to fit the norms of American life. Asian culture continues to be mocked on social media and it's not okay.

"In 1675, the government of the Plymouth Colony in Massachusetts executed three members of the Wampanoag." (National Geographic) The Wapong Leader, Philip, retaliated by attacking these people. This showed true leadership. This caused some others to do the same and make a stand. However, some did the opposite. They fought against their comrades and with the enemy. This was the start to the Indian war which lasted 14 months. Ending in late 1676.

Information from National Geographic
