"What would your mom say?"

Even though it may seem like parents are far removed from the teen culture on social media, according to a Pew study about a year ago, 61% of parents check which websites that their teen is visiting and 60% look at their teen's social media profiles (Anderson). Therefore, a majority of teens have their parents checking in on what they are doing online. So when you go to post that slightly risque photo on Instagram, chances are your mom will probably see it.

Anderson, M. (2016, January 07). Parents, Teens and Digital Monitoring.

Well, not necessarily. According to a recent study by Pew, 76% of teens with dating experience have not dated someone they first met online. All of these "Tinder relationships" may be relevant only because they are fascinating, not because everyone is meeting their soulmate on Tinder. However, this statistic also means that 24% have dated or hooked up with an individual that they met through an online site. That is almost one-in-four! Look around you, for every four people you see--one has hooked up with someone they just met online.

Anderson, M. (2015, October 01). Teen Voices: Dating in the Digital Age.

During our middle and high school careers, we all have those periods where we just feel like we are alone in this world. Friends aren't always the easiest to make. However, 72% of teens are exposed to a gaming world that opens up the doors of friendships. Of these teens who engage in video games, 36% of these teens have found a friend from video games. A whoppin' 59% of these teens have even heard their new friend's voice using a voice connection in the game! In the gaming world, you are never truly alone.

Lenhart, A. (2015, August 06).
Is Facebook Becoming Something for the Poor?

Facebook is nice and free to use--regardless of your income level. As the income level goes up, the gap between percentage of those teens on various social media sights decreases. For those with a yearly income less that $30,000 (which is not poor, may I add), 50% of these teens use Facebook while 19% use Instagram, 7% for Snapchat, and 3% on Twitter. Therefore, Facebook is not necessarily becoming a site specifically for lower income teens, but rather the higher income teens are a little more distributed over these sights. For those students with parents making $100,000+, only 31% have a Facebook profile, 25% use Instagram, 15% on Snapchat, and 8% on Twitter.

Lenhart, A. (2015, April 08). This is gorgeously them, and such a great meditation on Charlie's flailing attempts at Action and what the effect on Don must be." - rubynye.livejournal.com

Fan-fic writer, owl, wrote a piece after the episode of Numb3rs entitled Frenemies came out. It is based on the friendship of two brothers in a conflict. One brother had gone to a crime scene that apparently wasn't quite a crime scene yet and boy was the other brother upset! Fellow fan rubynye loved the textual production of this fan because owl captured the beauty of their relationship on a seemingly complex level.

https://owl.dreamwidth.org/413315.html#cutid1
