Hi XiLing, great presentation! You were very detailed in unpacking your study :) Totally agree with you that students learn even more when they are back in school. Just a suggestion for the SLS session on "Clap and Stomp", might be good to encourage students to record themselves as they get to review and reflect their performances, and this might help them to be even more prepared during the f2f session in school and it gives you the opportunity to know how much more you can "stretch" them.

Hi Jia Ling, thank you for your presentation. This is new ICT tool that I have yet to use, thank you for sharing. You're right, especially when it comes to introducing ICT tool to our students, good scaffolding by teacher is extremely important. Based on my own personal experience this term (Blended learning), my students were extremely appreciative of the resources and support that I was able to provide them during the activities (we were using Bandlab for Songwriting and most of them were new to this online DAW). Keep it up!

Hi Ying Hui, that was an excellent presentation! I learned so much from it, especially the part where your unpacked the pros and cons. Was the transition from GarageBand to Bandlab a challenge? Especially the planning of resources during CB? For me, I started using Bandlab during CB, it was a challenge at first for the students, most of them were new to this platform and our music unit spent quite a bit of time making the resources but I'm glad that all our Lower sec students are familiar with Bandlab after a term of using it :)

Good research done. I think that 4 tasks with varying levels were overwhelming for them? I guess 2 tasks would be sufficient to allow less confusion while still allowing for student choice. For me, I think where the student is at and where the assignment is asking them to go is important. I was just wondering if differentiated content and process was also included? Looking through your tasks, it looks quite varied! and hence, students were not able to make a choice?

I find it interesting comparing Showbie and SLS in providing students feedback and using it in the flipped classroom format. Does Showbie allow students to upload video footage? I know SLS does, and it certainly helps to use Showbie to provide immediate and clear written feedback/comments to the students.

Have you tried using other platforms that has integration with SLS? I heard BandLab has SLS integration, but are they any other applications or websites with similar functions?

Interesting module. Love the worksheets and the colour visual aids for the students. A lot of effort went into preparing the resources to guide them. And I will definitely consider this for my NT kids. What apps did you use for piano /drums and guitar to produce the sound? From the video, it looked like garageband.

Just curious and wanted to find out a little more (:
1) How did you scaffold your process to enable students to write 200-500 words reflections? I always face difficulty in getting my students to submit quality reflection :(
2) How many weeks did it take (e.g. teaching + students exploration time) before the students were ready for their performance assessment?
3) How much does 1 set of the midi controller + Ableton software cost?

Hi Jasmine and Elliot, thanks for sharing your findings on DI and your lesson ideas on using blended learning as an effective tool for music learning and music making. As my school adopts a 10-day timetable, I'm inspired to veer into a similar direction for my music curriculum in my school, since the weeks that I don't see them for lessons can be used for self-directed learning. This will help cut down on time spent on learning the foundations during class hours.

I have a question. May I know if the module was conducted over a period of a term or one semester? Did either of you employ any other apps other than SLS and BandLab, especially with getting students to do group work during HBL? Thanks.

Hi XiLing, thank you very much for your presentation, there is plenty to think about.When it comes to self assessment or critiquing others, we all face the same 'hard problem' whether we are adults or children: It's impossible to critique (ourselves or others) beyond the level of our own aural ability. I wonder if you think that increasing the aural and audiation skills of your students would also raise the depth of your students critiques?

Activity seems pretty fun and achieveable for the students by having the students to write their own lyrics. :D I believe the students had fun with it. One question: Are the students taught sequence when using Incredibox, and as when they're rapping? Would be another element for students to learn and take note of for this module.

Hello Jia Ling, I have always thought that Ableton Live is something that I cannot even do. However, from your sharing, it seems like I can learn the basics through self-exploration. thank you for sharing with us the difference between using a different platform other than SLS. This is interesting as i thought showbie would be a better platform to try because students can write or type their answers in and we would be able to mark. But since you reviewed that it will end up giving ourselves too many markings to do, then i have to agree that SLS will save us a lot of time from that. I have problems with a few students who would not watch the videos that i uploaded and would answer questions just to get it done and over with, therefore learning is not taken place. I even have students who would give me "NIL" or "I don't know" as an answer. Have you encountered such students? And how would you deal with students like this?

1) I assume students are using their personal phones? How did you check and ensure that students were on task instead of browsing other irrelevant apps on their phones? (my students tend to do that when I allow them to use their personal devices >.<)

If assign written or composition tasks, marking of individual studnet's work has always been a challenge. I normally assign group work, students in group to submit their presentation, share their videos and music composition using Bandlab and Acappella Apps, and explain elements used in thier composition. I like how you innovatively uses my.showbie.com which enable students to correspond with teacher, as well as upload videos and works easy for viewing and marking.

I am amazed at your ability to get the students to write such a wordy reflections. I can't even get them to do a survey properly at times .__. I am curious to how you juggle between the students who are motivated and not motivated? You caused me to reflect that there is useful prior music knowledge to have (audiation skills) and not so useful prior music knowledge (learnt intelectually without aural engagement). I wonder if you have considered how to take students to the next level with their improvisation once they have their confidence and self belief? Hi, interesting presentation about giving students more autonomy in the way they learn best by giving them chord charts and giving them a choice to choose their song. The warm-up practices seemed pretty useful in getting the students learn how to change chords on time. Would consider using similar methods for my Sec 1 ukulele module. :D

Hi Lixian! Congrats on completing your CI and i thought it it was a very detailed inquiry as you engaged in clarifying your teaching practice - wow!! I agree that playalong videos are really very helpful in the learning. The SLS self-record + upload / peer evaluation was really a great idea and I must say that I am still have not stepped out of my comfort zone to empower my students to do that. (time for me to try too!) It was a great move teaching them the strumming patterns and allowing them to make their musical decisions to apply what they have learnt. You've covered so many activities from parts of instru/playing/etc in your lesson with great activities and momentum. Thank you for the sharing, have learnt a lot! (:

That is really an insightful presentation! I have always struggled to make full use of the iPads, which is usually used only for Garageband. With your detailed breakdowns of the other apps, I have more confidence in conducting the lessons with my students next year. I think, besides the mindset of having weekly tasks for music, the students may also need to get use to the thought that not everyone is doing the same task for learning, and that they are learning at their own pace. And that when they get used to that notion, they will be able to achieve and be motivated to do the more 'challenging' tasks that their friends are doing. Keep it up!

Thank you for sharing and great collaboration!! Totally agree, DI and technology tools is unable to replace teacher-led activities. Based on my own experience during Blended Learning, it has made me realise that f2f interaction is very important for both teacher and students as it helps us to know how much we need to improve on our work and how we can "stretch" our students' ability. :)

"perfect" loop and somehow forgotten that they should focus on the bigger picture. Perhaps, one way to help is to set specific timeline for them to follow.

Xian, first of all, thank you so very much for this interesting presentation! A lot of thought has been put into it, there was flow in the presentation, details about how you carried out the module were clearly scaffolded and most importantly, you've captured the essence and spirit of what CI was meant to do! Realization and growth for us as educators (:

Your presentation has sparked some thoughts in me, so that is what I will be penning down here:
1a. Likewise here in EFSS, as well as what is discussed in Music ed conferences - Music is a social activity and it remains largely so. Even for the ukulele and iPad band module - most kids here cited collaboration as the skill that they've felt the most for and is consistent throughout the modules - i.e. working together towards something/ creating a common shared experience.

1b. To me, I ask myself - what is the eventual aim of the 2 year GMP syllabus? It is not as if that all the kids here will go on to become professional musicians who know what demisemiquavers are or how to freestyle given a melody... But more of - what skills can we teach them THROUGH what we offer (e.g. teamwork through ukulele, getting comfortable with the uncomfortable and exploring new ground (e.g. haven't touched music Tech before), or researching a potential interest area (e.g. I like Music by BTS - why? What do all these korean lyrics mean? Why is the Music structured this way? etc)

2a. Through this module and your survey results (there is no one strategy that is deemed as most effective out of the 6), you have learnt that every individual is different, that their learning pace is different and that our jobs as Music educators is to remain open-minded, and open up multiple pathways to learning and keep our lessons diverse - be it in resources, learning styles, assessments, so it is also a balance between giving that freedom and flexibility, as well as giving structure to their learning - I think the sweet spot will differ from batch to batch - so that remains a continued adventure for both you and educators like myself to find out more with each batch that comes (:

2b. Then again - also think about constraints and resources - given our limited time and lessons with the classes, what combination can work best for each and every class? (:

3. I've learnt new stuffs in teaching instruments/ ukulele - like your follow-on videos - possible to share them/ how you create them with me? If I may humbly ask? (:

4. I was reading this book lately - called "prepared" by Dianne Taveener - 1 thing she spoke of inside about "student ownership" (which is what you tried to increase more of in your classes!) is to tap on their intrinsic interests and innate curiosity to learn (: (You've realized that giving them the choice to perform their chosen piece have increased motivation in their learning - how then can this be taken a step further?) (: - e.g. "what if you use this strumming pattern here instead? This part to emphasize the chorus maybe everyone can play, while that part in verse maybe 2/4 first? etc.

Let them to be the one to ask the questions! It becomes more powerful that way - because it is something that THEY are curious about and NOT something where they "must learn" (:

5. 1 thing that I'm bringing back to the ukulele/instrument learning module next semester for the sec 2s here is on local Music - I think like what you said - choice is indeed important - so I will continue giving them choices to perform to increase their ownership! (Singapore folk Music, National day songs or modern songs (e.g. sam willows/ gentle bones, etc.) Always offer choices and when student ownership

Thank you for that detailed and entertaining sharing Elliot and Jasmine. I too can't wait for Bandlab to be made more accessible. What I actually suggested my students to do was to start off their projects on the bandlab mobile app on their phones and then do the fine tuning and tweaking back at home on their computers if possible. I feel your research has given me a lot more to work with when I design my next DI module. Thank you!

Thanks for the presentation Lixian! I think this was a very well thought out module. I am very impressed at the quality of submissions for the self-critiquing over SLS component. It gives me so much more confidence to try it with my students next year.
