Often times this higher power influenced our decision or made our decision for us. At times, this obedience can extend to friends (peer pressure). Another situation rose with people not questioning authority. It occurred with priests in the Roman Catholic Church having issues with sexual abuse. People were assigned positions as police officers and others as prisoners. In this experiment, over time the police offers acquired a superiority complex as a result of simply being told that they are better by the authority figure conducting the experiment. We are always told to trust them and respect them no matter what. Rebellious activity is seen as wrong and so we are taught from a young age to listen, conform, and that independent actions are only good if they follow the rules that are set by the superior. People will listen to an authority figure because that is what they have been taught to do.
