One way that schools advertise "making wishes come true" is by offering courses in fields where they have no prospect of employment. The course can sound exciting and appeal to their interests at first, but without proper research, students can find themselves graduating and not finding a job at all.

College institutions have been accused of providing inaccurate job placement rates, using questionable recruitment practices, misrepresenting their educational benefits, and giving inaccurate information about accreditation. Many students are sucked in by the appeal of the fake stats and later find out that their programs are not accredited at all.

I have experienced an online school advertising you can get your teaching degree online for the state of Maryland. I therefore did the program and did not find out until the very last possible minute that they do not actually allow you to get certified to teach in the state of Maryland. I had taken and paid for a bunch of classes from them and found out too late that it was all for not.

An advertisement I believe many of us see in our schools is data about our students. It's admin's way of "advertising" our strengths and weaknesses. If an area of our school's data seems lower than average, our school comes up with "fake" ways to improve data. For example, the 50% rule at my school has gotten out of hand. If a teacher wants to assign a 0, there is an 18 step flowchart you have to follow before assigning that zero. (I know this sounds ridiculous, but I've had the flowchart e-mailed to me numerous times). Because of this grade inflation, It's a fake advertisement our school is sending out about our students and their achievement data.

I feel that every new program that comes down the pike fits this. They might as well have cartoons with kids in a class with students using a method and lightbulbs over their head. Every program is always introduced as a miracle worker to have students achieve more. I think this is why so many teachers ignore the hype because they realize that it will be gone at most in a few years. Why would you waste your time investing in a program that will be replaced with another shiny red apple of knowledge at next year's beginning of the year PDs?

My school is literally selling the future promise of fame to students. We love to tout our famous alum as proof that stars are born in these hallways. And they are! But not everyone makes it. Not everyone wants it. Students do not always really internalize the amount of work and dedication that is required to actually make. The advertising says you can be a star, but it doesn't give you the fine print.

Wishes come true..
The misleading advertisement that comes to mind is the ongoing changes in curriculum. When we first adopted a new curriculum 5 year ago it was supposed to be what transformed student learning and delved in depth into the content like never before. 5 years later now, it is shown to be ineffective and is being replaced by another curriculum which is promising to make wishes come true...
