Sub Theme: 3D Shapes
Name of Activity: Making a Cube and a Pyramid
Objectives for children: encourages their thinking skills, learning a cube, learning a pyramid,
their mathematics skills, independence and enhancing fine motor skills
Vocabulary: cube, pyramid, shape, 3D, sides
Materials needed: toothpicks, plasticine
Procedures:
 Children will gather around table and the educator will explain what is going to be learnt
and done.
 A cube and pyramid will be displayed for children to grasp what is going to be taught.
 A poster will be shown to grasp the children’s attention and give them an understanding
of what a cube and pyramid is. Using the poster and the cube and pyramid they will count
the amount of sides on each shape.
 They will then be given toothpicks and plasticine (one step at a time they will be given);
they will count and figure out how many toothpicks are needed.
Questions to ask children:
 How many plasticine balls did you use?
 How many toothpicks did you use?
 What did you make?

Evaluation:
 The objectives were achieved, the children were able to comprehend the 3D shapes and
remember the amount of sides for each. They were shockingly able to build the shapes by
themselves; the only assistance needed was to build the base a bit sturdier to avoid
collapsing. By letting them roll and form balls with the plasticine, they were able to
enhance their fine motor skills.
 The children were very proud of their creations because they did it completely on their
own in which they asked for their picture to be taken to show their parents their creation.
When assisting to make the bottom a bit sturdier, they insisted on doing it themselves and
with the right instructions they were able to.
 My strategy to use the poster and the 3D shapes to help them understand worked well.
They were able to quickly grasp the concept.
 To improve I could’ve let them do a worksheet afterwards to reinforce the mathematics
part of it. That would’ve helped them a bit further to remember how many sides are on
each shape.
 As a teacher I need to improve my time management skills in order to fairly distribute my
