A significant development in World War I was the sinking of the Lusitania. As a result of the Germans murdering so many innocent civilians, American support for the Allies' involvement in the war increased dramatically. Additionally it showed how important foreign investments were to the United States, as the ship carried not only innocent Americans but cargo meant for the Allies. So this event made the U.S. government want to join the war not only to protect "American freedom" but also some of their biggest markets/financial investments.

Telegram January 19, 1917

German Foreign Minister Arthur Zimmerman proposed a military alliance with Mexico in this telegram, which was transmitted to Mexico in code. This, in my opinion, was important because it encouraged Americans to break ties with Germany because they believed the Germans were now unreliable because they had attempted to alli with Mexico behind their backs. The telegram's clear threats to the United States fueled anti-German sentiment in the country and persuaded Congress to declare war on Germany.

The Selective Service System and the registration requirement for young men in America give our nation a system and a set of rules. That in the event that the country should require a draft, will ensure the most rapid, effective, and fair selection process conceivable. Additionally, it was the first conflict in which propaganda was routinely produced by governments in an effort to influence public opinion. It took propaganda to incite enmity against the adversary, persuade the populace that the cause was just, enlist the active support and collaboration of neutral nations, and enhance the backing of allies during this and future contemporary wars.

By offering an alternative to the common "bully beef" rations, they assisted in balancing the soldiers' diet and preventing scurvy. Thus, a significant contributor to the shift in European consumption patterns both during and after the war was the introduction of processed foods into troops' diets. Europe experienced a severe food shortage as a result of the war's devastation, and they urgently needed wheat. Additionally, the US had nearly 4 million servicemen to feed. The weight of potatoes made it impractical to send them over the Atlantic Ocean, so the Administration advised Americans to eat them whenever feasible.
