Innovation is change, and more importantly change for the unknown. The execution organisation organisation is geared for repeatability and efficiency, and unwittingly punishes the exploration of the unknown. Framing an unsuccessful innovation effort as a failure, silently pushes the new efforts to search for secure grounds, landing in the mundane.

Innovation can not be measured only on a final successful or unsuccessful project, it should consider the process as well as the outcome in a way that ir values the learnings, the risks, and the aimed goal of every innovation venture.

Thus a project aiming for a bold goal, which prompted many paths of explorations, resulting in a reliable set of learned lessons, which might ultimately result on success or failure in its final deployment, could also be considered a successful innovation effort.

We should plan for a variety of exploitation strategies during the innovation path, and not to rely only on the final product deployment. For example be prepared to exploit unexpected discoveries, new contacts and alliances, new ideas for products, new discovered opportunities, and new lessons learned that have an universal impact in the organisation.

By Azael Capetillo
