If this proves successful, then 5 year- olds in the territory could go to school all day instead of for a half a day. This impacts the pressure on ECE centres to take children for half days, and helps parents with daycare. The children however benefit most with access to learning in a school setting and social opportunities with peers!

If passed, the proposed legislation will replace the outdated Child Care Act, legislation that was inherited from the Northwest Territories when Nunavut became a territory in 1999 and has not been updated since 1988. 

    According to the news release and the Child Day Care Act Consultation Report, the government consulted with 14 communities throughout the territory hearing from families, Inuit organizations, local leaders, and early learning and child care staff. The proposed changes capture a commitment to ensure early learning and child care in Nunavut is “accessible, affordable, inclusive, and rooted in Inuit culture, values and language. This represents a significant step forward in prioritizing the well-being and education of children in Nunavut.

    This article also states that it moves to $10-a day at daycares.

    This will help many families who are already struggling with the high cost of living in Nunavut. Opening more childcare spaces will ensure that it will be more accessible for many families across the territory.

Since their centre burnt down and they have been renting this is a huge accomplishment. There chair says it has taken 12 years to work on this , that is amazing. Arctic Bay, Nunavut, will soon have a child-care facility once again. At its board of directors meeting, the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA) approved $14 million for the Kakivak Association to build the centre. 

    "We all know the communities are getting bigger. We've got to ensure we have a facility that'll be adequate in the future," QIA president Olayuk Akesuk said. 


    I am delighted for Arctic Bay regarding this significant milestone in establishing for upcoming new daycare. The introduction of a new daycare will be substantial assistance to individuals requiring childcare services, as well those seeking employment opportunities. That is indeed excellent news!

This will help with the problem of daycare workers and by offering such program they will attract and encourage many workers to be certified without the fear of loosing their income and they will be in the comfort of their homes with family while doing so. The major issue besides daycare spot availability is for the centres to keep or maintain their numbers due to lack of stuff. This will pave a way for more centres to open and for those available to operate at full capacity.
