Influences of others

In the book, the influences of Mona’s friends and family led her to do some negative things and some positive things. Her gang friends encouraged her to drink and party all night, which was a negative. Her friends at the station encouraged her to go back to school and her family encouraged her to leave Frank which, were positive things. The picture represents how a person can easily influence others. When Jesse came to Mona's house injured there was a quote saying, "To a young girl's eyes, though, Jesse and his friends seemed more and more like cool and exciting figures. I still believed my father's warning about the gang, but my resolve was already slipping, giving away to a giddy infatuation." This quote shows how easily gang members can have an influence on people.

The consequences of gang life

In Two Badges, Mona had witnessed people dying, drinking, doing drugs, getting arrested, and getting raped because of gang life. Mona's relationship with her family was bad and her grades went down and had to graduate late due to being in a gang. Those were the consequences she had to face. The picture shows that there are consequences for your actions. The quote," 'Gang-related death' became a familiar phrase, and the stories would go on and on about the police and politicians urging action and promising crackdowns and calling for community help-but none of that mattered.", shows how dangerous gang life can be.

The book shows that Mona tried redeeming herself by get a better education, staying away from gang life, and becoming a police officer so she could have a better life. The picture helps represent redemption because church helps sinners be better people.

Hardships of love

Because Mona loved Frank so much, she had a hard time leaving him even when he started to hit her, which caused her to suffer. The quote said in the book after Frank hits her for the first time, "It wouldn't happen again. It was a one-time thing, it had to be.", shows that Mona tried to deny the fact that he wasn't safe to be around because she was deeply in love with him. But in reality she became depressed and was in constant danger because of Frank. The picture is an example of this theme because Mona was heartbroken from the things Frank used to do to her.
