In what ways has your protagonist changed and evolved?

Kate and August have changed through my novel, Kate's has changed not only by appearance but also by morals wise, possibly personality-wise as well. How Kate changed appearance wise is that now she has a big claw mark on her stomach from malchai. Along with a claw mark on one of her shoulders. How Kate changed moral wise along with personality wise is that now she has no more respect for her father. After all the things that happened she truly realized how bad of a person her father was. Not only did he treat his wife poorly but Kate's father is also part of the reason why Kate and August we're being hunted down. Kate’s father was trying to break the treaty by blaming August for killing Kate. This changed Kate as a person after the fight with August's brother Leo they went to go and confront her father and after doing so they ended up killing him. Kate decides to leave the city after when they killed her father because if she stays in that city she is most likely just going to get killed because of the Malchai. Page 412 say, “We can protect you - But she was already shaking her head. No one can protect me August. Not in the city. Not anymore.” August has changed a bit too in this journey, appearance-wise he no longer has tallies on his body due to him going dark. Otherwise that is all four appearance, on personality though August has changed a bit because of him wanting to protect Kate so much. He became more brave and I would say became more fund of staying with his family from almost losing all of it. I would also like to say that he became more aware of what he actually is and has started to embrace that side of him more instead of denying it and trying to change it.

What social commentary do you think your author was making with this novel? What is the author saying or warning about today's world?

I believe some of the social commentary that my author was saying is that nothing stays the same. Everything changes once in awhile, It doesn't matter if it's a good change or bad change. Nothing stays the same forever and it doesn't matter what it is, it could be human, monster, plant, animal, things, and it still will changes. The reason I say this is because there is a quote in the story that states “ Nothing gets to stay the same.” It's not a matter of if it will change it's a matter of when it will change. Another one could be your sins follow you wherever you go. One of the reasons why I say that is because in the book people the that murder other innocent people, get there souls corrupted. When their souls get corrupted their souls become monstrous shadows that only Sunai can see. “No one else could see it, but to August’s eyes, it loomed in the air a ghostly with too many features for a shadow, too few for a man.”

What aspects of the Dystopian society are found in your novel? What statement is the author trying to make by utilizing that particular aspect? What is the change that your character/s are attempting to bring about? Do you think they will be successful and if so, will the change bring what they hope?

Some aspects of a dystopian society in my novel are propaganda, paranoia, and standard of living. How I can tell it is kind of propaganda is because one of the leaders (Callum Harker) of V-City is trying to break the treaty between the two halves. So not only can he start a war but he can also try to take over the city again. On the other hand both Harker and Flynn are trying to make sound like that they have the monster issue under control. Even though Harkers monsters are betraying him along with Flynn son also has betrayed him. Then why it is paranoia is because the systems are scared of living the safety of their cities just in case they get killed. Standard of living has a place in my novel because depending on how much money you have, you could either go over to Harker which cost a lot, or go over to Flynn which does not cost that much. Kate and August are not trying to change anything, they just want to survive from all the other monsters. Unless you count them trying to keep the treaty from breaking, although I suppose August is the one that is trying to keep the peace. On page 389 it says, “ You protect a sinner. To protect our family. Our city. Killing her will start a war,” Since August and Kate aren't really trying to change everything besides from August I would say that they would be pretty successful.

Thinking back to the aspects of the Hero's Journey that we studied during the Odyssey, What are some of the elements that are also utilized in your novel and with your protagonist?

Kate and August have gone through some of the hero's journey, not all of it but some of it. August is the one that experiences call to adventure or somewhat, August wants to help out. He doesn't want to sit back and not do anything. He doesn't want to fight either but he wants to do something, anything, to help stop the monsters from attacking and killing everyone. Then there is assistance, he gets help or permission from his father that he could do something to help. Not help with the monster, but help get Kate Harker on their side so when the treaty breaks they would have an upper hand in the war. Neither Kate or August experiences departure because they both stay in the same area for the majority of the book. They both technically experience trials because throughout the book the monsters of their city are trying to attack them so they have to fight back but also have to run away and hide. Then there is approach, Kate and August have to face or fight a monster named Sloan. Sloan is part of the reason why August and Kate have to run and hide, because he is the leader of the Malchai that is trying to frame and kill them. Page 239 says, “but I’m pretty sure he wants me gone, and if he could frame Flynn in the process-I don’t know anyone else who’d think that many steps ahead. Most of the Malchai are single minded killers. Sloan’s….different.” Are crisis is when Loe, August brother shows up and reveals that he was part of the plan to frame and break the treaty. Since August is too weak to fight his brother and very hungry he has no choice but to go dark or Show his true form. In that form he usually doesn't have control over so he has no choice but to take Kate’s soul. Although, August manages to find some sort of control in that form and instead of taking Kate soul, he absorbs his brother's soul instead and transforms back. So after everything, they return to the city, Kate confronts her father, and start a whole new adventure after when Kate leaves the city and crosses the border.

Is he/she experiencing success or roadblocks, and how is the success or roadblocks being handled?

In the middle of my novel Kate and August are not trying to rebel, they do rebel at some point in the book but just not in the middle of it. They start to rebel when the Malchai started to attack them. They fought many of them but they Kept

on attaching so their best option was to run and hide. Doing this made people think that August killed or kidnapped Kate, so the treaty between the two cities would break and war would start. One of the roadblocks is the book was that tt was hard for Kate and August to find a safe place to hide. The reason being that it seemed like no matter where they went something or someone was able to find them. Later on in the book they found out that Kate’s father put a tracking device in the silver pendant that he gave her, so when it broke it was no longer tracking them. On page 406 it says, “ The pendant had cracked, the silver case splitting to reveal the chip inside.”

What are the common ideas taking place in your novel? In what ways do the common ideas effect your characters choices or actions?

One of the most common things that happen in my novel is the sense of unsafely. Almost through my whole novel there has been this sense of unsafely. Page 244 says, “ Fine, don’t believe me, but it isn’t safe here, it isn’t safe anywhere.” The reason why it is not safe is because of the monsters lurking in the shadows ready to strike when they get the chance. Therefore the cities never had this sense of safety or protection. Even though both halves of the city try very hard to make people believe that it is safe, that is not true. There is almost always some kind of news about someone getting murdered or killed. Kate and August know this very well therefore they are both armed and ready for any attacks from the monsters. The monsters are the reason why they started to run and hide because they were trying to kill Kate and August.

Include one quote from the novel to describe your character. Include the page number you find the quote on.

I actually have two main characters and their names are Katherine (but goes by Kate) and August. Kate has blond straight hair that goes down to shoulder length, her hair was parted so it covered half of her face. That hid a scar that traced her hairline from her temple to her jaw, she has another that looks like a drying teardrop in the corner of her eye. She has dark eyes, a sharp jaw with a slim and sharp body. On page eight in the prologue it says, “ It was strange, how only the obvious parts showed up against the darkened glass - light hair, sharp jaw, dark eyes - not the car like a drying tear in the corner of her eye, or the one that traced her hairline from temple to jaw.” She's reckless and can be a troublemaker at times, but somehow can also be funny. She has a bit of a short temper depending on what she overheard or seen. Along with that she's strong and intimidating, she make sure that everybody is below her and that she is the top of her school. What I like about Kate is that she has different qualities then other book characters that I have read. Along with that I like how these types of characters are strong and brave because I'm not really the type that could do the stuff that they go through or have done.

What theme topics are you seeing in your novel? Explain a bit how your protagonist is reacting to these topics.

I believe that the theme topic of my story is good vs evil, my two main characters, Kate and August are from two different families who each control half of the city. There was a war that went on between the two halves of the city. This is because Kate's father, Callum Harker, was trying to take over the city for himself even though Henry Flynn (August’s father) was the original leader of the city. The war went on for six years before Henry and Harker decide to split the city in half. The reason why I say it's a good vs evil is because Harker was trying to take over the city all for himself. Therefore he almost reputation of the evil part while Henry is technically the good part. Page eighteen says, “The wall was the result of six years of territory war, each act of violence, each human death, ushering more Corsai and Malchai into the would, all because the Flynns has the city, and Harker wanted it.” Harker is part of the evil side of the story the other half belongs to the monsters or creatures of the night that come out and try to eat the people of the city and kill them.

Dystopian Controls:

What aspects of Dystopian Control is being presented in your novel? How are the characters handling them? Do any of these aspects of Dystopian Control resemble conditions happening in our world today?

The novel I am reading a novel that has some of corporate control and bureaucratic control. Some elements of corporate control is that there are two major companies or leaders in the city, one major company controls the North and then the other controls the South. Each half of the city has some kind of protection from the monsters, like they have these pure iron pins with the letter v branded into it. They are said to ward off the monsters because the monsters are afraid of pure iron. The reason why the monsters are afraid of pure iron is because pure iron can kill them. Other then that there is not that much else that's branded,or advertisement, along with them not really controlling anyone. What I mean by this is that the two leaders don't control the people how they wish, sure there's people going around and making sure everything's in place. Example would be that they're making sure there's no crimes or anything like that, and the two leaders are more about protecting their citizens from the monsters than anything else. Then the there is some bureaucratic control, because the two leaders do have control, not over the citizens, but some of the monsters. For example the South side leader has a lot of control over the monsters while the north side only has control over specific monsters. Either way they both have control over some of the monsters, and in a sense they are using them to kill the ones that won't obey them. On Page ninety four is says, “ The Corsai had a hive-mind - you ruled them all or none - and somehow, Harker had bent them to his will ( A Corsai is one of the monsters).”

In the Dystopian Elements handout, there are six examples of conflicts the protagonist/main character might got through. These are not the only conflicts the character might encounter, but just a start. Identify at least one internal conflict your main character is experiencing.
Example:
At the beginning of 1984, Winston, the protagonist, is feeling trapped. There is a great deal of describing the Big Brother posters and how the eyes seemed to follow people. In the apartment, Winston also is very deliberate about having his back to the telescreen or having his facial expression set before turning so the telescreen could "see" him and what he was doing. The layout of his apartment was described, but not with furniture, but as to what areas of the apartment could not be observed by the telescreen.
I also see Winston taking a stand against the establishment. Ignorance is valued and thinking as an individual is considered a crime. Winston buys a journal - illegally and goes to great lengths to find an old pen with which to write in the journal. Just writing/keeping a journal or diary is a punishable act, yet he goes to great lengths to begin to do so and in an area of the apartment that the telescreen cannot "see". This journal, I believe, is going to be an important aspect of Winston's journey.

The setting comes across as very urban and somewhat cold and desolate. I do not get the idea that it is winter.
