I added this video just to show the similarities between house cats and wild cats copulating. Some similarities that I saw were the fact that the male mounts from behind and also will bite the females neck during copulation. One difference that I saw was that it did not seem like the courting period was as long as it was with the house cats.

This video shows a male and female sex actually having copulation from start to finish. The courting period seems pretty short to me since the whole video lasts only about 3 minutes. The most important part to me is the end where you can see the female's grooming herself after copulation. She rolls around a lot and licks herself after the male leaves.

*Some things you can see in cats that will show you that they are mating are:
-Licking each other
- Looking at the other gender's genitalia.
*The male will mount the female by putting his two front paws up on the female. When he has entered the female, he will move up and down using his back paws and he will also bite the female's neck. I believe he bites the neck possibly to show dominance or to keep the female in place.

The length of copulation typically lasts anywhere from 30 seconds to 5 minutes for cats. When the male dismounts , the female will make a loud call which will make the male go away from the female. Mating can occur 6-7 times or until the queen will not allow the male to copulate anymore. Mating between cats can continue up to four days.

This is a picture of a male penis. The male penis is quite different from some other species. Toms have a barbed penis which basically means that the penis has a bunch of hooks on it that makes copulation for females painful. This is usually why the females are so loud during copulation. The barbed penis keeps the female from getting away because it locks in the vagina. It also starts stimulates ovulation in the female. Some other species that have a barbed penis are snakes and squirrels.

Abortion in cats on day 45 and day 46

Although abortion does not technically have anything to do with the mating behavior of cats, the introduction does talk about how mating dates of cats can be unknown and this causes problems when estimating the length of the pregnancy. Abdominal palpation can not typically show the actual length of the pregnancy and since many people do not want to go the surgical route this is quite a problem in the feline world.

Introduction of Oestrus with eCG Administration During the Non-Breeding Season

This study talks about a certain breed of cats. It says that this breed is seasonally polyestrous. It also says that they are long-day breeders and the breeding season is typically from January until the early autumn seasons. This study goes into how adding eCG hormones into the cat and how that can change the breeding season. I believe this can affect mating because if the male is not prepared to breed during a different breeding season, this could mean the female would not be able to copulate so it would only get pregnant if it was artificially inseminated.

Study of Behavior

In Principles & Applications of Domestic Animal Behavior by Edward O. Price, there is study done on the behavior of cats on page 244 when kittens are human reared alone, human reared with a single sibling, and mother reared with a single sibling. The results showed that the human reared cats were more aggressive and lacking in trust towards humans as well as males that they were paired with. You can relate this to mating behavior because this could cause the female cat to be much more difficult to breed because she will be more selective of the male she wants to be with. This might even cause the female to not want to bred at all.
