Elie watches his father get slapped and fall to the floor. He stood there doing nothing. 

Elie thought it was getting better and still did not realize what was ahead. He was now in Auschwitz where they allowed them to shower and sleep. Elie admitted that he felt the officer was lying and that Auschwitz felt like a convalescent home.
