Key arguments from John's Scagg's The Hard Boiled Crime reading

- The emergence of the hard boiled crime genre where detective fiction 'developed in the United States' ( Scaggs J, 2005, p.55)

- The prototype of the crime fighting hero begun to develop into a 'large, tough man' (Scaggs J, 2005, p.55) fighting against the injustices being committed by people in power

- Pulp magazines were introduced as as short stories in "Black Mask magazine, the most influential and successful of the pulps, before publishing novels" (Scaggs J, 2005, p.55)

A key argument Scagg's argues is hard boiled crime is typically an American intervention that's intervention is identified through three key elements. The first element encompasses "the Californian setting"(Scaggs J, 2005, p.57) where the detective is a street smart, fighting and cautious protagonist that is rough around the edges. The second is his use of American language that allows him to adapt to whatever crowd he encounters. Scagg's observes Ernest Mandels work that states "pulp magazines 'developed more or less simultaneously with the rise of organised crime in the United states" ( Scaggs J, 2005, p.57) The last element is the American characteristics such as the increasing rise of corrupt law enforcement and increasingly regular crimes being committed during the 20th century.

Scaggs, John 2005, "The Hard-Boiled Crime", Crime Fiction, London: Routledge, 55-84.

Relevance to The Big Sleep

Raymond Chandler's narrative is a more classical framework for the hard boiled crime sub genre. Its tough and rugged hero is connected to a more realistic and gutty crime. It adheres to Scagg's three elements with its popular American vernacular to the female femme fatale tempting the lone, gusty hero.

The film's trailer shows the rough around the edges typical male lead that brings the book to life. The black and white portrayal of their wardrobes and demeanour are similar to the gangster's that plagued the country during the 1940's. Scagg's notes how famous pulp magazines got because of the increasing amount of criminal activity prevalent as well as the corruption playing the justice system.

Similarly to the mask Dorothy Porter writes about the unyielding emotions of the femme fatale in The Big Sleep represent the typically hard boiled crime framework. The depravity portrayed in both of these narratives are an essential part to the sub genre to highlight the changing roles of gender and public perceptions to sexuality, race and sin.

Relevance to Monkey's Mask

Scagg's work is relevant to Monkey's Mask by Dorothy Porter through its semi-traditional hard-boiled crime genre and model. Swapping the tough talking male lead for a queer, solitary private investigator expands the stereotypical characteristics supplied by the genre. The Femme fatale character usually played by a seductive woman is instead Carmen's husband, Nick. Monkey's Mask setting in North Shore, Sydney is one thing that follows the line of urban setting's that are needed in this genre.

The inclusion of lyrical poetry extends Monkey Mask from fitting too neatly in inside the hard boiled genre framework. The gritty aspects of Monkey's Mask provide according to Scagg's that " realism of the genre is not unique but...realism of the 'meant streets' of hard boiled fiction disguised a certain continuity" (Scaggs J, 2005, p.58)

Porter dives deeper into the aspects of hard boiled crime into desires of the body beyond the femme fatale and brooding male hero. The mask is a way of hiding away from the obvious and is so important to the narrative. Porter's writing explores the human desires that seem to only emerge under dire circumstances. Similarly the use of the private eye, Jill looking into the darkest most secret parts of the characters around her as well as inside herself to understand the human emotional temptations. Monkey's Mask reveals the depravity of the human condition through Porter's characters. For example Nick a human rights lawyer who kills a young girl during sex. This paradox of right and wrong is a staple in the hard boiled crime genre from detectives turning bad to lawyers becoming murders.
