“Located in the heart of the Andean mountains, the town of Cuenca is entrenched in a valley irrigated by four rivers. This location has over a long period of time favoured close contact with the natural environment.” (UNESCO World Heritage Centre, s.f.) Its architectonic and natural beauty made Cuenca a city close to the arts, and its good climate throughout the year is perfect to host an event such as the Biennale.

What are the artistic manifestations presented at the Biennial? and what does each one represent?

The first editions were exclusively painting. More than a decade ago, we incorporated a conceptual model that opened up other languages, new media, transitioning to a Contemporary Art Biennial. Over time, we achieved the seat of the largest and most representative art event in the country.

When and why did the Biennale events change?

The biennial has changed drastically, as initially, only painting was exhibited. Currently, all types of contemporary art are showcased. Contemporary art is a current form of art that can be represented in various ways, as it is not confined to a single style. Artists draw inspiration from social issues, values, customs, and other social themes. This was not the case in the past, as ancient artists tended to focus on religion or mythology.
