Louis XVI called a meeting because the French government was having a financial crisis. After arguing over how they would vote for several days, the Third Estate began to take matters into their own hands. They met on their own and invited members of the other estates to join them. On June 13, 1789, the Third Estate declared itself the "National Assembly." They would begin making their own laws and running the country. The representatives of each estate at the Estates General assembly were elected by the people from their estate.

The March of Versailles was on October 5, 1789. During the March of Versailles, there were six thousand women that marched thirteen miles from Paris to Versailles. They traveled that far to get the the King (Louis XVI) and Queen (Marie Antoinette) beautiful palace. When they got to the king and queen, the woman constantly shouted "Bread''. The angry mob of women wanted nothing but bread because, they were use to eating two pounds a day. A LOT RIGHT!! In 1789, the main food of consumers was bread. This event gave revolutionaries confidence in the power of the people over the king. The March on Versailles was steps toward democracy. This is because when the women forced Louis XVI, to take his family to Paris, they were helping the eventful abolishment of monarchy in France.

Napoleon was a 5 foot 2 legend of France. He was born on the island of, Corsica. Napoleon rapidly gained power through the ranks of his military success. When he went into the military he was only the age of 9 or 10. That's where he learned most of his skills and intelligence. Because of his military success it was easy for him to become Emperor of France. December 2nd, 1804, Napoleon crowned himself emperor at Notre Dame de Paris. According to legend, during the coronation he snatched the crown from the hands of Pope Pius VII and crowned himself, thus displaying his rejection of the authority of the Pontiff. The Coup of 18 Brumaire brought Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte to power as First Consul of France and in the view of most historians ended the French Revolution. This bloodless coup d'état overthrew the Directory, replacing it with the French Consulate.

The revolution did get rid of the monarchy and the aristocracy, but it didn't lead to a democracy. Instead, the revolution provided a set of ideas. It was, of course, led by people supported the ideas of liberty, fraternity, and equality. Therefore also Napoleon's slogan "order, security, and efficiency. This is a major aspect of democracy. The initial drive of the Revolution was create a Republic in which all citizens were equal before the law, had a freedom of speech and religion, and last and certainly not least citizens had equal rights. A key element in the revolution was revulsion against the inequalities of the French society, not just as they were common in people's lives but also as far as they were enshrined in the legal and political system. Such as being born and a noble family and the peasants weren't able to move up in a higher class system, which was unfair. Although the French Revolution was eventually, after a long period of uncertainty, degenerated into the Terror and the dictatorship of napoleon, its initial ideals were democratic including secularism, the rights of women, the 1st amendment and redistribution of property. These ideals eventually became enshrined in the democratic government of France in the second half of the 19th century and are central to French society today.
