Aging Simulation Reflection (Wed 9AM) by

After participating in the empathic exercises reflect on this experience. In your reflection, touch on the following:

• How did you feel physically and emotionally?
• What challenges did you experience doing the exercises?
• How did you cope with them?
• Most importantly, how has this experience changed you or your view of aging or of older adults?

I had felt tired and good as can be I guess. The challenges that I had experienced were I had felt a little out of breathe, from having to hold my breathe throughout the activity. Also, trying to see the phone number while trying to type the correct amount for the gas company bill. I had coped with them the best that I could and did the best to my knowledge. Most importantly, this activity has opened my eyes a little more on how aging or older adults struggle with some of these things, more in the sense of their vision loss. And even those who experience memory loss. To treat everyone with respect and to help them wherever they need it!

Physically I felt very restricted. Emotionally I felt a bit helpless and hopeless when imagining 3 things I thrive for are now gone. Challenges were mainly the restricting the ability to walk openly and straining my eyes to see. Coping including straining to compensate but didn't help much. All of my grandparents have passed, but it made me thing about how much my maternal grandmother struggled in her last years, especially while battling dementia.

Aging Simulation reflection- Chris

During the simulation I was in good health and a good mindset though I can see how it would not only be difficult physically getting old, but emotionally it must be super hard. I can see how older people can have emotional breakdowns because the are simply experiencing a difficult time doing something that should be simple. Being old can seem overwhelming. I'm not looking forward to becoming old. I have more appreciation for my elders and the daily struggles they must overcome.

I felt very frustrated and annoyed that it was hard to see things or get things done as easily as I do. The challenges I faced were eye sight impairment, when walking it was harder and slower and breathing was not as easy as it is now. I had to accept how I did things and move on so they wouldn’t take me as long. I have worked with older patients before and knew that they struggled but now that I was able to put myself in their shoes I can see how much they really struggle.

Physically, I felt I was very limited to the things I could do. I wanted to walk normal, look normal, breath normal, but I wasn't able to. Emotionally I felt really sad for some reason. I realize that we can sometimes discriminate against older people but now I see how hard they have it. To the challenges that were presented, I was able to cope with them knowing that as I get older I'll see these changes more naturally. After this exercise, I was able to grow more empathy for older people and it just made me be more grateful for what I have.
- Christian Rascon

Physically I felt very restricted and had to think about my movements more. When walking I felt as if I couldn’t move around as freely and hold onto something. When eating, I felt that I needed to compromise either my breath or my taste and chewing. I felt quite frustrated not being able to do things for myself, and wanted to give up what I had to do. With this experience, I am realizing how much older people struggle to do simple tasks as taking their medication or folding their clothes.

It was a very different feeling compared to how I function regularly. Physically, I felt very limited to seeing and hearing things, as well as how fast and ow much I move. Emotionally, it made me sad thinking about how restricted my actions were and the thought of losing things that make life worth living. I was unable to see and hear clearly at all. I coped through by just trusting what I thought I heard and saw. It has opened my eyes that it can be difficult to do daily tasks for old people that used to be as active as I was.

I felt annoyed at myself for not being able to do things that seem so simple. I think the hardest one that affected me was losing the vision. I couldn't see anything at all and it was frustrating trying to find things and not seeing. I found myself putting my face closer to the screen trying to read the numbers. This experience has opened my eyes to the affects of aging. I feel that I need to be more grateful that I'm able to do the things I can and to take better care of myself so I wont be struggling as much later on in life.

Keith Miranda-I felt greatly inconvenienced and limited physically. Emotionally, I was frustrated with how difficult simple things were. During the exercise I experienced how difficult it is to accomplish even simple tasks when you have poor eye sight, such as reading and writing. Those two skills are some of the most important ways to communicate and understand the world around us. I managed to cope with my poor eyesight by looking at things more closely and more slowly. Also recognizing the shape and colors of certain items, such as the green cap on my allergy pill bottle, allowed me to compensate for my decreased vision. This lesson has really allowed me to be grateful for what I have, such as my health and the people in my life. It is a reminder to be patient with aging/older adults and to also treat/speak to them respectfully, being conscientious of not being demeaning with our actions or tone.

I felt really frustrated when I couldn't open my chocolate bar. The instructions from the medicine were impossible to read, same for the phone number from the phone book, so hard to find the person. Really nice experience.
