Feedback Focus: For this piece, I was given permission to do an illustration response piece instead of recreating my collage. I would appreciate extra tips on techniques for working on darker paper. Because I haven't done much with it before, my lack of knowledge with using it really shows, I think, but I did choose it for a challenge-- in particular, I would appreciate a way to make the lighter colours more vivid since it's very hard to make them look right on black. I would also like feedback on more ways to incorporate aspects of my collage into my illustration. Originally, I was going to add the eyes, but it didn't go according to plan. Don't be scared to tell me how it is, I appreciate harsh critique! Thank you.

I created a popup landscape inside of a box. all of the paper folds allow it to fold down and the box to completely close. I would love to hear feedback on techniques you might of used to help me better my drawing. I personally chose to draw each element of the collage separately and then in the end I used glue to paste it all together. Since this technique took longer than anticipated, I made an artistic choice to leave out an element. Let me know how I could have maybe made up for this. Whether that’s spending more time on boosting the color, or pushing the value, etc. Thank you!
I admire the artistic risks you took throughout this project. You did an effective job integrating the collage mindset (being open to mistakes/opportunities) and created a strong Prismacolor Drawing. I think this drawing’s greatest strength is its dreamlike layering through marker, Prismacolor pencils, gel pens, and graphite. It’s pretty unbelievable what you were able to achieve with these materials.

Looking at your drawing you have accurate proportions throughout and a strong composition. In your original collage I notice a type of filter on the human figures that simplifies skin tone into basic shapes/colors. Although this is a smart method, I think it might have potentially been confusing. I recommend looking at the original source images and trying to incorporate some in between shades to create structure.

I noticed the colors in your drawing have a higher saturation compared to your collage. I think this choice of saturated color was a smart move to create a complementary color scheme (oranges and blues).

One last recommendation I have is to experiment with an air brush set (I have one you could use). I recently saw a youtube tutorial where the artist created smooth/transparent gradients through airbrushes and then layered Prismacolor on top. This method would be helpful for your clouds.

First, let me start by saying you never fail to impress me. Your accuracy with composition, as well as your color accuracy , are amazing. I love how you took risks throughout this whole final by using multiple imagery and portraits of yourself. However, in experience it is hard to recreate the same face with the same accuracy every time. I would suggest taking more time to really look at the details in your faces, or using your face once and use the remove/replace strategy for the rest of them. Your piece is very strong, and other than that I wouldn’t change a thing.

OMG Dana mwah mwah to all the different textures in this piece they are BEAUTIFUL!! Especially nice job with the clouds, they look very tangible and real. I really enjoy how you brought the color pallet from the collage piece to the illustration as well. A few things I think you should work on is being more precise about the folds in fabric, and making it look like the fabric is actually folding that way. I also feel the upper left corner of the illustration is a bit empty, and maybe incorporating an entangled texture of branches from the collage there could have elevated the piece to another level. Other than that, I think you did a fantastic job on this piece. Another thing I'd like to highlight is the shines on the razors coming out of the clouds, it really makes them pop and elevates the illustration. Overall I think your strongest element of your work is the use of texture. Excellent work sir B)

Omg I love this piece!! I think you did an excellent job with portraying depth, especially with the addition of the lights. I think the way you worked with perspective is really interesting, and the layered effect really elevates the sculpture. The only things I would change about this piece is perhaps making the torn edges a bit cleaner. Torn edges can make for a really cool effect which I think you accomplished in this piece, but I also think it could do with a cleaner execution. I would also put something in the negative space that the mountains are sitting in, the blackness of it is a little distracting, and the lack of texture clashes harshly with the very textured paper. My favorite thing about this piece by far though is the background, and incorporation of the lights in it. It really ties the piece together and sells it as a beautiful landscape, maybe even a landscape on another planet. I also enjoy that the teared edges of the mountains reference back to the torn photograph in the collage. Overall I think the collage and sculpture tie together very well, and also stand alone as individual pieces. Fantastic work Ezra!!!

For this project I also did it with dark paper and oh my god was it hard. I don’t particularly enjoy how all the colors came out on mine, but I just experimented a whole bunch. Take it on like you’ve never had any experience with color, like you’ve never even touched color before. Learn how to create new mixtures even if they aren’t the same as the ones on tan or white paper. I think you did very well with the dark paper though. I think it looks great!

The likeness in your portrait is also very well done! I would suggest pushing the values in your hair a lot more. It looks like some of your lines are a little harsh and could be blended smoother, specifically on the hand. My tip for proportion issues would be guidelines on the face during the sketching phase, making sure all your facial features line up correctly.

First of all, this looks incredible! The collage in this is really cool I really like the way the parts of the face are split and in different areas! And yeah, I totally get it, making the skin color look like what it is in the collage is stupidly difficult. But I think you did the skin color really well, and you will definitely master it perfectly in no time if you can do the skin color on there! Honestly, the hair is pretty spot on comparing to the collage, and really I think the best way to make hair look like..hair is to really just blend a lot but don't over blend it to the point where you can't even get the pencil to show up. Some kind of advice on the shirt, specifically on the bottom, is maybe make the clothing a little more darker to create shadow and make it look more realistic..? (I'm trying to think of some better word for it but my brain can't do) Just so it looks like there's some kind of shadow in there and that clothes have wrinkles and shadow on them. But I really think you did a great job and you should definitely be proud of it because it looks really good! Oh and the background is just perfect, the blending is just mMM fab.

Charlotte,
This art piece is absolutely stunning! I love everything about it, from the collage to the drawing. This was executed so beautifully! I love the color pallet, I feel like all the colors work so nicely together! The likeness in the drawing is extremely strong, and it’s hard to tell the difference between the two.

This drawing is super hard to critique because of how wonderful it is, but a couple things I noticed are a little color differences. For example, the lemon and the water effect, the color is slightly off. With the water I would have loved if the color was more vibrant like shown in the collage. But for the lemon I actually preferred what you did! I love that the color is more vibrant than in the collage I think it really added to your colorful collage! One more thing, I believe you used colored pencil for your black and white hand. I would have loved to see that done in graphite pencils. I believe that it would have given you a better range in value and would have prevented a little bit of muddy-ness in the hand. While this isn’t that big of a deal I needed something to critique.

To end everything in a good note I’d love to praise this art piece one more time. Two things that I found absolute perfection in your drawing are the octopus and the color drips at the bottom!!!! The octopus literally looks like you glued it onto your drawing. *chefs kiss* I really appreciate the range of value throughout your whole drawing but specifically in your octopus!!! And the color drip is immaculate, it adds so much strength to the drawing. I respect the precision in both the color accuracy and just over all the shapes and lines. You should be super proud Charlotte, you have impressed me!! And from seeing all your drawing so far this has been definitely one of your strongest pieces! Keep up the great work, and I can’t wait to see more of your work :)
From your critique buddy,
Cece xoxo

This is such a beautiful piece, I especially love the colors you chose and how they complement one another! You can really see the thought behind the whole composition. Your composition is, in my opinion, highly effective and I feel that the flowers frame the face beautifully. The cracks on the portrait break up the drawing and keep you involved in the piece for longer. Your proportions are very accurate and may be the only thing that may be slightly disproportionate is the lips. I think they may be slightly too small, but this is highly nitpicky. The one thing I notice about the drawing as a whole is that the graphite slightly fades to the background. I think if you were to bump up the contrast on the whole figure and move into deeper values you would find that the portrait stands out a little bit more.

Carrine, I'd like to start off by saying that I understand your frustration. Secondly, though I understand your harshness on yourself, I personally think that your prismacolour piece is beautiful! Even if the colours aren't exactly what you'd wished for or may be off from the original, in fact I think they're more beautiful than the original. I think the majority of your struggles may lie in the possibility that you may be more of an illustration-based artist in contrast to being an observational/recreational one-- which, personally, I think is super awesome! I really like the textures of everything in this piece (intentional or not), and would say it reminds me of a painting some rich person somewhere would spend 100K+ on to have in their living room. It's a bit of a weird thing to think of, but really, I do like it very much. A suggestion I have that could perhaps make your life a little easier is printing the collage out and trying to copy lengths and dimensions of things there. If getting the colour "wrong" is something that bothers you, maybe instead of trying to get the exact colour of the original an idea would be just to go absolutely insane mental with the colours and change them all up into something different! As for the "smoothness," this is also something I struggle with. I think that to add smoother transitions between colours it's very important to do light layering inbetween each section-- even if its a small little slither of a colour in the middle, it could really make a difference. All in all, though being critical of your own work is very important to improving, I think you should know that you deserve more credit than you give yourself for this piece. It may not have turned out the way you wanted it to, but nonetheless it's very well done to me. I absolutely adore it-- especially the colours! Keep your head up, Carrine, you're doing wonderfully. :]

I really appreciate your attention to detail, every element of the drawing is there. I love how the chaotic-ness from your collage transferred so nicely into your drawing! I love everything about this drawing, but I especially love the background. Nothing about the background scared you, you were able to give the background just as much attention to detail as you gave the things in the foreground. And you didn’t leave out any elements. Which I really appreciate because I can tell that you put a lot of time and hard work into this piece.

Although this drawing is stunning I have to give you at least one critique. And although it was hard to find one, I came across a couple. My biggest critiques would have to be some facial proportions in your little self portraits and a little bit of coloration differences. In some of your self portraits some of your face proportions get a little bit wonky. Honestly though I feel like this adds to the chaotic vibe you have going on, and the spot on colors in the portraits make up for it. Like I was saying a lot of your colors are accurate, but a few I noticed were a bit off. Like in the eye figure, the dress is a little to blue when it should be a little more black. And I feel like a little bit of value was lost in the bloody/ boney background. I would have enjoyed it more if it had bloody/ gooey elements to it. Also I’m being super nit picky because I’m being graded to critique you guys.
Noam you should be extremely proud! This drawing is amazing and is so eye catching, I literally want to stare at it all day! Once again I am so impressed with everything you do with your art, and I love how you don’t let anything scare you in art. Keep it up!!
Love your critique buddy,
Cece xoxo

I want to start by admiring your color pencil application, and because of this you can clearly see the detail within the whole drawing. The light hitting the ground is my favorite part of the whole piece. You’ve asked for feedback on the proportions and I think overall you did a nice job. I would shrink the head slightly, as the portrait seems to be a little bit stylized. I am not sure if this was an illustrative decision, but the figures are significantly closer. I don’t think there is anything wrong with this, but it also might play into it looking slightly less accurate to the reference photo. Your color accuracy seems to be technically close, but highly saturated. I see this mostly in the portraits shirt and hair, and possibly adding more brown tones to desaturate it would’ve helped with color accuracy. I see that a portion of the background is done behind the portrait, and I think seeing it throughout the rest of the piece would have helped to elevate the drawing further. Overall wonderful job!

Miss Renicky?!?!?!?! This is amazing?!?! Great work! I especially like the colour of the shirt. I think something to improve upon would be the angle of the head. It's tilted differently in your recreation than the original and I feel as though that affected the rest of the drawing's proportions as well. The background colour is also a little too light-- it could be the lighting, though. I love how the planet thing looks! It really adds to the rest of the piece. A suggestion I have is maybe adding other mediums into your work to produce specific effects, such as using charcoal or chalk to make the glowing around you feel more "glowy." Overall, you did well on this project. Your art is beautiful as always! Keep it up homie 😄♥

Ezra first off your original collage is beautiful! The depth and colors work so nicely together and I think you did a really good job at transferring that to your 3D response piece. I think it was a great decision to do your response piece with a night time perspective. You changed the colors of the mountains to match the lighting which I think was very smart. I love that you decided to add lights to it because in my opinion the elevate it to a different level of complexity. That being said I wish you would have included the split Polaroid photo into the piece somehow. It was one of my favorite parts of the collage . I also liked that in the original response piece that the sun was centered. I think if you did this in your 3D piece it would tie it together a little bit more. Right now, since what I'm assuming is a moon is in the top corner, that's where my eye is drawn to. However, since this is a response to your original collage, I don't know if that being there was somehow symbolic in any way. Overall you did a fantastic job and I think you really excelled in exploring something different than everyone else :)

Dana this is stunning! I love that you took more of a mark making approach rather than a more blended one. I think it really works in your favor, especially on the black paper because it allows the black to create a natural dark tone underneath the colors. I also love how you did the clouds! They have an amazing billowy affect that I think really elevates your drawing. In my personal opinion, I think adding more elements from your collage would make your drawing to busy. I think the combination of elements you have right now really works well together. My only critique would be that, even though your piece is mostly done with mark making, I think it would help if the white and red elements that are coming out of the clouds were in more of a blended style.

As for making your colors more vibrant, what I have found with working on black paper is sometimes it helps to layer a white pen under your colors. Although some pens don't react well with colored pencils so it really depends. If you were to try this technique in a later drawing I would test it first on a different sheet of paper.

Overall this piece is absolutely stunning and you should be really proud :)

Mimi, I'll begin by saying that I really like the smoothness of the background and the moon. Did you really use pencils for that?????? I'm extremely impressed, I can't burnish like that for my life. I would also like to say I love the vividness of the red coat in particular-- I feel like this is also where you got the colour most accurate in addition to the grey tones. To respond to your feedback focus, I think you did very well with your composition! I feel like the moon balances out the placement of everything else by being a little upper and to the right. I also like the mountains a lot. In terms of proportion, it seems like you have a tendency to accidentally make things a little smaller than they are in the photo, such as the heads of the people and the moon. Did you reference from your phone? This could be a possible reason why since the screen is so small compared to the paper (if you used it). Revisiting the topic of colour accuracy, I think that because you chose such nice, de-saturated colours in your collage, it made it a little harder recreate them to full accuracy in your drawing, particularly in the faded background. In the end, I think that though this for sure isn't your best work, you did well considering the constraints of the project as well as the medium! I always look forward to seeing your work, hun. Keep it up! I'm proud of you. :]

Your colors are beautiful and the proportions of your drawing are very accurate.
All I would say is don’t be afraid of those dark values and dark colors, your colors are not wrong they just need a little drop of darkness like on the car door and in the ladies clothes and hair. Your half of face in the window is excellent. I would suggest spending more time on your background. When u have large amount of color for the sky then it is okay to generalize , but when u have something in your background like trees, mountains, grass then you may want to define the edges and curves of that more to have the most effective drawing.

wow, Jay Jay, this piece is so good!!! I really appreciate the simplicity in the subject and composition. I also think that the sharpness of the elements, like the mouths and eyes, is really aesthetically pleasing. I would also like to say that the color accuracy is spot on pretty much the entire drawing. the mouths and eyes are extremely realistic and look just like the collage. As someone who had a lot of fine detail in their drawing, I know how hard it is, but those small dollar bills are really good! I need to stop complimenting this piece and get to the critique, but I have to add one more thing! The way you drew the glass cup is really good, because I can tell from the reference and in general that drawing glass is hard, but you were able to capture that really nicely. Chefs kiss!

ok, for the critique I would say a few things. I think that the rough texture of the sky background is distracting and ruins the fantasy a bit. So I would recommend trying to use a solvent, like alcohol or a blending marker to try and smooth it out really nicely. I personally like when there is a graphic element like outlining something, but I think in the case of the couch it could be tweaked a little. Maybe instead of doing super harsh lines, you could blend it out a bit, or make those lines thinner. I guess I could say that the birds in the background are smaller in the collage, but I honestly don't think that it changes much. The only other thing I would say is that in the collage, I think it would've made more sense to split the birds differently. I liked how you put the bodies on one side and the heads on the other, but I think you should've switched the order of the bodies. I don't know how to explain it, but there is a bird that is more purple than the other, so if you switched that one with the whiter one, it would make more sense because the bird would be split by the cup. Idk if that made sense.
I had to be really picky, cause this piece is really strong, so good job!

First of all I would like to say that your piece looks superb! I appreciate the detail put into each and every part of the drawing. Overall I think your proportions look very good, but having to say something, I think that the kid on the bottom left of the drawing seems to be a bit big compared to the other things around it, and there neck might is a bit long. Your composition looks great and is framed well. The colors in the prismacolor drawing seem to be a bit more saturated when compared to the original collage shown, and due to the saturation I believe it is a bit difficult to show the transparent qualities of the collage. I think your craftsmanship is explicit. I personally would have lightly layered and blended the colors together to make it look smoother, but overall I cant think of much more to critique. Your piece looks amazing, and you should be proud! :)

Peppermint, this is amazing! I had to do portraits in my drawing so I understand how hard they can be, but you did yours extremely well. I also think the figures are very well done and the proportions are spot on! I also really like the folds in the fabric and, like Natalie said, the shadows on the ground. I also really enjoy the graphic white lines, they add a lot of personality. I think overall it's a really strong piece and you should be proud.

You asked about proportions, and I think the figures are actually really good. The face could use some tweaking to get a good likeness. In order to make the cheeks look less full, you could've blended out the highlight on the cheek more. It was very concentrated in one spot, which made it look really high. The nose is longer in the picture, and including the harsh shadow behind the nostrils, would make the noise look bigger, like in the picture. The eyes in the reference did not have any white in it, because of the angle, so if you replaced the white with the rest of the lashes/under eye skin, you would achieve that same look. The shadow under the jaw was also more prominent in the reference. I do think, tho that the face is still really good! The white lines near the portrait are kind of hard to see, so I think making the back of the shirt a little darker as well as making the lines thicker, would make them pop. I also think that the background being the portrait could have been darker, which, again, would make the white lines pop.
That's pretty much it. Good job, this piece is great and you should be proud!!!

Such as the couch, the perspective looks slightly off, and the color of it is slightly off (but you can barley tell, it might be the lighting of the picture taken). The sky background seems to be textured, almost as if you went vertically up and down with the pencil as you were drawing the piece. Ummm... the money seems to be a bit lighter it the drawing. Ok, i'm sorry I literally can't think of any other things to critique. This looks really good and you should be really proud of your self! :D

The skin on the rectangle does look slightly muddy, but the main reason for that seems to be only because there's no shading there. The color itself isn't the problem, the color is completely accurate. The only problem is that you focused on getting it right so much you forgot to shade the skin. I also don't really see many problems with the hair, you might want to make the highlights a bit larger, but other than that the hair is perfect. You might want to focus on the direction the fur is going a bit more though. In the collage it looks like it's fluffing out, but in the drawing it looks more like it was shaped. The hands are amazing. The only problem I have with them is that it looks like you over blended them a bit. They are also much brighter than the collage. The only other things I have to comment on would be that you probably should have used a ruler for the lines and that the flower should be more saturated. Other than that your drawing is incredible and you should be proud of it.

Carrine this is AMAZING! Like...CHEF KISS! You shouldn't be hard on yourself! When I first seen your piece, I immediately thought it was like a painting. The texture looks smooth and I really enjoy how you colored the TV. I also enjoy the clouds to. The colors aren't awful at all. They might not match up with it but it gives out a more dramatic feeling to the piece itself. It seems flowy and lose in my opinion. I understand on how you feel about the colors not matching up because I was struggling with my piece with that to, but you shouldn't be to hard on yourself at all. You also did this on black paper which must've been a challenge. I also enjoy the highlights in you piece. You should be very proud and happy that you completed this master piece! I'm definitely glad you did because I got to see the outcome of it and other artists too! I think you have great potential so keep doing what you do! :)

Your collage is absolutely gorgeous and I love how dreamlike it feels! You have very strong proportions and color accuracy, although I agree with Avery that the car door could have been a little darker. I like the idea of generalizing your background, although i think you generalized it too much. While I agree that it was a good decision to not put all the detail in the background to give the door and large figure the focal point, I think you could add a little bit of texture to differentiate your greenery and still have an effective generalized background.
This is being super nit-picky but another thing I would be careful of is the halo effect around the largest figure. On the collage there is a slight halo, but it is much more subtle. In the drawing it is too harsh and bright and looks unintentional. I don't know if you were trying to have the halo there or not, but if you were then i recommend softening it up a little bit; if it was unintentional not then the halo effect is something too look out for in the future.
Overall I really like your drawing, and you did a great job of recreating your collage!

Dear Maia,
First off this piece is excellent! I love how identifiable it is. The photo reference and final piece have very little differences and I think that the collage is attention grabbing and well thought out. I do agree with you on the red part. I think that it does look a little empty but I feel like your level or skill and creativity throughout all the other sections made up for that space. I think that the blending is a bit streaky in some areas but overall is not bad at all. I feel like though the energy may be more apparent in the picture over the drawing, the energy in the drawing is still very real. The use of the black paper, i'm assuming, lead you to create large sections of contrast which draw the viewer in. Great job!

Cece I really like your drawing, and your collage! I agree with Ms. J, and really enjoy the more saturated colors in the drawing. it makes it feel just as dreamlike as the collage but in a completely different way. I think you handled the transparency really well in the largest butterfly near the head. The colors feel like your looking though something into that sky, great job, especially since they weren't even on the same papers. One thing i think you could be different are the three butterflies in the corner. the color is really accurate to the collage but because the rest of the color in the sky is so much more vibrant in the drawing, they feel a little muddy. I really appreciate your craftsmanship and I think the way you collaged them all together was very effective. I also think the textures in your clouds sets them apart really well. Overall you did a great job Cece, I think it turned out really well!

Ok first off, this looks really good, like how?! I really like the highlights and how you did the background, the hair is really good and how it's really well blended! The collage itself is really cool with how some of it is blurred and the saturation in it is really cool too. The drawing, in my opinion does really match the energy and kind of vibe in the photo. Here's something that i'm just a little bit stuck on.. the background, the black part in the top left area? I don't know if it's just the lighting or whatever, but it doesn't look too black enough like the original, I think if you took like, compressed charcoal I feel like it would maybe match the energy in the original like you wanted. But other than that, this looks really good and like it's just my god broski y e s

I really, really like your collage! your color accuracy is really good, and the transparency in the houses is so effective and really cool. The one thing about the houses that I would critique is the angels. some of the lines specifically in the most forefront house are ever so slightly off and it's throwing off the perspective. I agree that the fog could be softer towards the edges, but i also think that the color of the fog is too warm. Overall I think your drawing is really strong and super beautiful.

Dear Charlotte,
First off... this is incredible. I do not understand how you were able to make this look better than the reference. I mean wow, just wow. This is amazing and you should be very proud. I think with the values you hit the nail on the head, this is very apparent in the hand. I think that the saturation in this piece is very professional looking and i really appreciate the orange slice. It is actually more vibrant and detailed than the reference and I think it takes a lot of skill to do that well. I think the likeness is impeccable and the attention to detail for the dripping colors and octopus is incredible. I really can't find anything to criticize. This is amazing!!!

Hi Mimi! My name is Kambria and I'm a junior in visual art, and I just wanted to say how much I enjoy this piece! I love how the sky turned out, it's so smooth and saturated. The mountains create a dynamic composition and frame the subjects really nicely, and the hands on the sides make the piece seem surreal and playful. The only thing I could say is to embrace the lighter parts as well as the dark! Accentuating the highlights in the background will make the mountains pop even more!

Hey Lena! I'm gonna be honest, I'm kinda in love with this piece. I can't get over those flowers and succulents, the colors are blended so well! I really like the cracks too, I think they both help with the composition and give the portrait more life. I agree with the other critiques, boosting the contrast will make this even better than it already is. Great job!
