The Historical Event

The battle of Cyprus took place between 1570-1573. Venice controlled Cyprus, and made a ton of money from the port. The Ottoman Empire was expanding, and when it finished its wars it focused in on Cyprus. The battle of Lepanto was the main decisive battle of the war, when the Ottomans lost despite their advantage in numbers.

The way the novel supports/clashes

The novel supports the historical event generally, but clashes when it comes down to the details. For example, it is true to both life and Othello that the Ottomans launched a fleet bound for Cyprus how this fleet was defeated differs. In real life "The Holy League won a decisive victory, destroying most of the Ottoman fleet and ending their three-decade naval dominance." However, in Othello "Our wars are done. The desperate tempest hath so banged the Turks that their designment halts." These quotes serve to show the incongruity between how the fleet was destroyed in Othello and in real life.

Othello's Critique

In the story Othello, the war was portrayed to last a shorter amount of time than historically accurate. In the battle, it lasts for over a decade of naval warfare. In the story, it seems to give fewer details about the war making it last less time in comparison. The main focus of the story was true to the attack's area/focus on the Turks the reasoning for the attack was also accurate with a focus on resources. The story however put focus on the characters outside of the war.
