Irena Sendler in her lifetime save over 2,500 children in the Warsaw Ghetto. She was born on February 15th 1910 in Warsaw but grew up in Otwock Poland. Early in life Irena's father died of typhus but this only motivated her more. When she got older she started forging papers of numerous Jews and joined a underground organization dedicated to saving Jews from camps called Zegota, there she headed up the children's division. Using her code name Jolanta she would sneak into camps and sneak out children. Kids would sneak out by crawling through sewer and underground passage ways, hiding under an ambulance stretcher and if they were sick enough on top of it, and even hiding in suitcases or trolleys. One of Irena's favorite ways was through the court house but it eventually shut down and she was forced to find other ways. But sadly she was caught and interrogated for information about Zegota, she gave them a twisted version of the truth but the solider already knew everything she was asked and she was sentenced to be executed. With her legs and foot fractured from the interrogation she was in no shape to fight back. But little did she know that someone from Zegota had bribed the guard and she made it out alive. She spent the rest of the war in hiding. After the war ended she started digging up the jars she had buried to save the kids information and tried to reunite them with their closes Jewish family member for most of the kids parent had died in the camp.

Also her father was a big part of her motivation he was a doctor who helped people in need no matter who they were. Irena admired this about her father and it soon became clear that she wanted to follow in his moral footsteps. She later wrote, “I was raised to believe that the question of religion, nation, belonging to any race is of no importance—it’s a human being that matters!”
