The trick here is to not pick truth vs. loyalty, despite the name. Here, I would choose short-term vs. long-term. While it appears fact that Maud's work could be replaced with computers and it would be a fiscally appropriate decision, playing the long game sends a message to employees that the company will stand by its "people." Meaning, if you remain loyal to the company, we will do what is right by you. There will be plenty of time to shift to computer-based work as Maud eases towards retirement.

Kidder suggests this one lines up with truth vs. loyalty and I can see that argument. We know the truth, and we know there is a certain degree of loyalty involved with the professional duties of a counselor. The question becomes whether or not the counselor is or should be loyal to the individual they are providing care for? I would fall on the side of truth, there has to be a way to communicate he truth and loyalty by having them see a different therapist due to conflict of interest.

This one is justice vs. mercy for me. And I believe the trooper did act out of mercy. They stuck with their principles (justice) by not shooting them, but they did provide care for the individuals needs by helping them suffer less given the gravity of the situation.

This final one would be individual vs. community. Allowing the four seniors a "pass" or "warning" would highlight individualism and I believe the appropriate action here is to consider the individual impact, but act in a way that preserves community. With that, the consequence needs to be one that sets the tone/precedent for future infractions of similar nature.

I think this one connects most closely to individual/community, for me. Both Endicott and Loring have made individual decisions to be at the bar that night. For Ms. Loring it was a means to an end and for Mr. Endicott it was clearly a decision he was not proud of.

. The Trooper - The dilemma paradigm discussed here is Justice / Mercy. This is a pretty extreme case and I do not believe anyone would handle the situation well especially in this day in age. I believe I would do the same thing as the trooper and choose mercy, but the whole time I would be fighting with the idea of breaking the law. I actually had a similar discussion with my father on the idea of assisted suicide and if it is right or wrong. He is all for assisted suicide and he always says that when he becomes a burden on the ones he loves or himself he would like the choice of siding with mercy. I do not know if I have it in me to make that call for my own family.

The Social Counselor - The dilemma paradigm discussed here is truth / loyalty, though in this instance there could also be a discussion involving individual / community. Sticking with truth / loyalty, I would side with the counselor and tell the patient. However, I would want the best of both worlds and to not jeopardize my job so I would find some way for her to gain this information other than me directly telling her. I value loyalty strongly, but truth superseeds it.

The Loyal Employee - The dilemma paradigm discussed is Individual / Community. However once again it also teeters on truth / loyalty. Using the books example of individual / community I believe that I would try to find Maud another job within our walls as loyalty is worth a lot! I do believe that a loyal employee is worth saving if at all possible. The employee may need better guidance, but if their heart is there, they belong in that workplace. In the same breath, if it is impossible to save Maude's job, I would do what is right for the community and release her.

The Basketball Team - The dilemma paradigm discussed both justice and mercy as well as short term / long term. As a school administrator I want to do my best to help raise children to grow into great adults. Kids are kids, they are not adults because in most cases they lack experiences… good and bad. In this scenario I would have the girls do in school suspension with education on alcohol and a testing scenario to see if they need inpatient help. I would use the chemical violation guidelines of a two game suspension and keep them on the team. I believe that solution is a good balance for teachers that want justice, as well as what is right for the girls in the long term.

Public or Private? I believe the paradigms to discuss here are truth / loyalty, individual / community, as well as short/ long term. The first thing I would ask myself is… What am I doing in this bar?” If I have a hard time with my teacher dancing in this bar, it is a little hypocritical if I am a patron of the establishment. Keeping that in the back of my mind it would be hard for me to turn around and discipline Loring for her actions as me entering an establishment such as this could be seen as just as bad. Here is what I believe I would do, not having any other information as far as rules / laws on the subject. I believe I would have a quick conversation with her, and then exit the building. I believe I would follow up with her with a planned meeting regarding her moon lighting. In this meeting she would hear all of her accolades and how those could quickly diminish if this employment was to be made public. It helps that this is out of town. As it currently does not interfere with her role as an educator at our school I would have a conversation regarding the slippery slope that she is on. Jointly, I would let her know that if her employment did affect her teaching credentials (being a role model to kids) we would surely need a follow up conversation and that it would be hard for me to support her as I do not believe that this profession is one that would positively influence kids

The Trooper - Ch. 3 (pp48-49), (p162)
Short/Long Term is the paradigm I used to determine my actions for this scenario. Short term meant acting quickly to put the driver out of his misery or face the long-term consequences as a result of the actions.
The Social Counselor - Ch. 5 (pp 122-123)
Individual/ Community is the paradigm I used for this scenario because the counselor has a choice to preserve her job and not say anything. Alternatively, she could end up saving a lot more people if she informs her client about what she knows about the boyfriend.
The Loyal Employee - Ch. 6 (p130)
Truth/Loyalty plays a great deal in the decision the principal has to make on whether to keep or terminate the loyal employee. The facts suggest that the employee should be terminated, however because of her positive nature and her time spent at the school, this decision starts to become very difficult.
The Basketball Team – Ch. 6 (p140)
Justice/Mercy paradigm plays here because the principal has to make a choice in determining whether the students should face the consequences of their actions and be refused to be part of the team. On the other hand, should we look at the students' actions as a cry for help and offer them assistance to overcome the larger underlying issues.

Next steps for Endicott (Perspective of Superintendent)
I think any paradigm could play here based on the relationship of Endicott with the teacher and also the superintendent. Also depending on when the information surfaces the decisions might be different. If I were in the position of a supt. who learned about this case about an active principal, I would use the individual/community paradigm to determine my actions. This is because ultimately, private affairs are no longer private once they get out to the public space, and it is something that could impact the school community as trust could be broken.

Justice vs Mercy because the trooper guided by rules of the position did not shoot, but found another way to relieve the man trapped.

The purpose is to get decision makers into the space of weighing the options using the 4 paradigms, the means to the end. After a decision is made, we often go through the what-ifs. This helps bring clarity and prioritize the most important point of the dilemma, so we can make the best decisions.

Trooper - I could never shoot someone, so I would have done something similar. Showing mercy is where I lean.

Short Term vs Long Term because May has to look at both what consequences would be if she warns its unprofessional yet if she does it may help her client. In the long term it could also have an impact on her professional life and on the clients health physical and psychological. She may feel satisfaction short term but could result negatively long term.

Counselor - I would not reveal the connection to the client. Thinking more long term for both parties.

Loyal employee - I would have chosen the community. I would have chosen to relieve Maud of her duties for the betterment of the organization, with proof obviously. I do not take that decision lightly.

Basketball - I would have suspended the players. Rules are rules and the impact of that decision would have set precedent for others. Why have them sign the sports agreement if it's not upheld.

I would use short-term vs long-term: Both have points to consider. I do not believe either of them did anything wrong, because again it is legal and was on their own time outside of work. But there are things to consider and clarify to be sure whatever decisions are made are the best for all impacted.

As a boss, I would want to prioritize the needs of the community while also finding a way to humanize the individual with directive coaching or a clear improvement plan.

She recognizes that by admitting her past relationship with the boyfriend, she protects the community, but leaves herself vulnerable to consequences such as loss of income. On the other hand, not admitting it protects herself, but leaves the patient and community at a risk she is well aware of.

I thought self/community because it seemed that Bill was struggling to balance the needs of Maud with those of the school community. On the other hand, he was also trying to figure out the best long-term plan for school while focusing on Maud's short-term needs.

The basketball team is an example of Justice/Mercy. The players displayed clearly problematic behavior in a very public manner, and were already more visible in the community anyway. Holding such a role means that whatever consequence is given will be taken as the "rule" for all future incidents. However, despite whether their actions were a cry for help, they are still developing teenagers and do not have the mental capacity to see long-term consequences. This could a teachable moment for all, if the girls were approached with some compassion and understanding.

Bill is faced with two choices: stay loyal to Maud and her time, dedication, and personal loyalty to the college, or be truthful with Maud and let her know that unfortunately her skill sets just don't align with their current needs. Allen had to choose between making an example of the girls and their choice to engage in underage drinking, or show them mercy and provide them with the help they desperately need. I struggle with this paradigm and the need for it to be so black and white. I believe we just aim for both - give appropriate consequences, but keep in mind these are children in need of support and learning, not to just be written off as troublemakers.

As others have noted this one seems tricky to identify just one paradigm to see this case through. I think I would place it in Truth v Loyalty. The loyalty aspect for me is what I find to be the most paramount. I believe when people give their loyalty and dedication to a company though they should expect the same in return. Why I would tie in other paradigms because I believe that loyalty builds community, and will be good for the long term situation of any organization.

For me I would consider this one in the Justice v Mercy with attention to the long term effects. I would want to show mercy for the girls in their situation while also making sure that their futures are not affected in too negatively a way from this situation or the future stability of the school.
