Society's Impact on Self-Esteem: Everyday, we are exposed to people's opinions on who or what we should be. There are many unrealistic expectations within those opinions which can be a major contributing factor when it comes to self-confidence. If we allow other peoples' ideas and rules of how we should live your life, you will simply never be truly happy.

Family and Friends: The people you spend time with have a huge influence on your self-esteem. Your friends can build up your self-confidence, self-image, and self-respect, or they can bring it down. The same applies to your family. Feelings of inadequacy can result in lower self-esteem while building each other up can lead to a higher self-esteem.

Work Environment: A majority of our time is spent at school or work. This environment tends to contribute a lot to your life, especially self-esteem. If you have a hard day of work, you are most likely going to be lacking in self-esteem because of it. Working in an encouraging and productive environment can increase your self-esteem and can help you grow stronger.

Self esteem is seen as something that develops through "nature and nurture". A child's biological strengths and weaknesses (nature) and heir interactions with family and social environment. Contradictory to the orange article, this one states that parents have little to no control over their child's self-esteem.
Supposedly, children born with easy-going temperaments tend to be more "chilled out" and more likely to go with the flow.
They tend to have more patience when it comes to difficult situations than other kids born with more emotionally volatile temperaments.

Difficult or stressful early life experiences including, illness or sustained hospitalization, household moves, family changes, death in the family, and abuse can affect a child's evolution of their beliefs and view of themselves.

Although this article states that parents have no control over their child's self esteem, it explains that self-esteem is a social process and is easily influenced by how other see and treat them on a daily basis. Therefore, parents play a huge role in helping children develop a positive self esteem about themselves because they are the people that children spend most of their time with.

Self-esteem tends to fluctuate over time, depending on your circumstances. It's normal to go through times when you feel down about yourself and times when you feel good about yourself. Generally, however, self-esteem stays in a range that reflects how you feel about yourself overall, and increases slightly with age.

There are obviously two sides to self-esteem- low self esteem and high self esteem. Some benefits of high self-esteem include the following:

Assertive in expressing your needs and opinions

Confident in your ability to make decisions

Able to form secure and honest relationships — and less likely to stay in unhealthy ones

Realistic in your expectations and less likely to be overcritical of yourself and others

More resilient and better able to weather stress and setback
