Certain groups and people were recognized as either Christian, Buddhist, or Muslim and this was able to lead them to get targeted. Overall people of different ethnic religions were recognized for being so. This sadly led to them getting targeted and labeled. People under the control of Khmer Rouge were labeled as “base people” the newer people were treated harshly and in 1976, people were reclassified as “full rights (base) people.”

The Khmer Rouge had also persecuted those who were more educated and intelligent such as doctors or lawyers. This would have negatively affected the injured during the actual Extermination stage with injuries or ideas to calm the people down. Those such as doctors would be needed when it came to injuries or attacks from the group yet they were persecuted first leaving the people in a bad place.

Khmer Rouge imposed a strict work regime that required both new and base people to work grueling hours, from dusk till dawn. Starvation was rampant and people had to resort to growing their own foods. There were hundreds of thousands that were executed in the regime, most of the people were class enemies and ethnic minorities. Several victims went through torture in the “Tuol Seng”. Christian and Buddhist groups were targeted but the Cham Muslim population was in the most danger, “As many as 500,000 people, or 70% of the total Cham population, were exterminated” (“Cambodia” 11).
