"Marguerite at the Piano -1890

Dr. Paul Gatchet who was one of Van Gogh's physicians plays a big role in the making of this painting. Gatchet and Van Gogh developed a friendship and Van Gogh was welcomed with open arms by his family. Dr. Gatchet's daughter, Marguerite is the one who posed for both Van Gogh's "Marguerite at the Piano" and "Marguerite in the Garden" paintings. Van Gogh used oil and canvas to create this piece in 1890. The actual painting was had by the Gatchet family until 1954. It is currently held at Musee d'Orsay. This letter sketch by Van Gogh has been lost. It is a simplistic drawing of what turned out to be the oil painting of "Marguerite at the Piano". Rumor was spread at the time of this painting that Van Gogh and twenty-year-old Marguerite were involved in an affair. More detail was added from the original sketch as compared to the final oil painting. Viewers can also see the great similarities between both the original sketch and the final canvas portrait. The paints used help Marguerite come to life upon the completion of the oil painting. Impasto is a style used by artist where paint is applied thickly to a surface. Due to the thick application of paint, brush strokes become visible. This style was used with “Marguerite at the Piano”, specifically within the dress portion of the painting. A mixture of varying techniques allowed for a very visually appealing painting by Van Gogh.

Vincent Van Gogh is an astonishing artist known for many famous paintings such as; "Starry Night", and "Sunflowers". Unfortunately much of his artwork has been misplaced, or is being held in undisclosed locations. For example; some of Van Gogh's paintings have been victim to theft in the past, and were never recovered. Some of his paintings and sketches also have a chance of being in the hands of someone who doesn't register famous original artwork, like art museums. This exhibition will focus on some of Van Gogh's lost painting and sketches such as; "Marguerite at the Piano", "Poppy Flowers", and "Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuene".

"Poppy Flowers - 1887"

This oil painting entitled "Poppy Flower" by Vincent Van Gogh was not stolen once, but twice. In Cairo Egypt, the Mohammed Mahmoud Khalil Museum housed this painting twice. In the year of 1997 "Poppy Flowers" was stolen for the first time. However, this painting was recovered ten years later. Unfortunately, it was stolen again in 2010 directly from its frame. The canvas remains missing. It is noted that the day this painting was stolen for a second time that the museum only had ten visitors. "Poppy Flowers" by Vincent Van Gogh is estimated to be worth $50,000,000. Formal elements of this painting that engage viewers stem from the dark background which is contrasted with the more vibrant yellow flowers, along with the two red flowers. Van Gogh chose to make a central focal point by placing the vase filled with flowers in the center of the canvas. This oil painting replicates newer techniques that were used in the time period (1887). Van Gogh chose to uptake the French painting trend that other artists of this time period were also participating in. French painting was made to accurately display the effects that light and varying colors had on an object. This was done objectively, but also very well by Vincent Van Gogh in his painting of “Poppy Flowers”.

"Congregation Leaving the Reformed Church in Nuene - 1884"

The oil on canvas painting was painted in February of 1884. Van Gogh painted it for his mother when she was stuck at home with a broken leg. It was held in the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam until it was stolen in December of 2002. It remained missing for 13 years. It was later recovered by the Italian law enforcement agency in January of 2016 without its original frame. It wasn't until March of 2017 that it was placed back on display in the Van Gogh museum. The focal point of this painting is the Reformed Church in Nuene. The congregation is blurred and blended. By using the blending technique to paint the congregation it gives viewers the illusion that the congregation must have been large in number as well as moving, or leaving. The rendering of this painting was originally created in a sketch. Portions of the sketch have been omitted by Van Gogh from the painting. One omitting aspect includes a peasant that was near the congregation holding a spade. The palate chosen to create this painting is rather dark. This makes the mood of the painting quite gloomy. There are many different stories that could be drawn from what Van Gogh was trying to convey. One might attribute that the painting is trying to capture a funeral and the congregation is loved ones and friends of the deceased. There are many other conclusions that can be drawn from painting like these which make them so unique and beautiful.
