Principle of Design - Contrast

For my contrast, I chose to draw the crown from Super Mario. It has a dark gold with very bright gems, contrasting with the gold, and for the background/bag color, I chose a dark deep blue, to contrast with the crowns colors.

Here’s my EMPHASIS art! It’s a bag, like the last one, but to show emphasis, the bag is a boring brown, and there’s muted grey circles. But in the center, is a bright red circle, larger too, making it emphasized, a simple but nice design.

For my variety, I chose to make a bag (again) but it’s green, and then in center is a vase, with flowers. The flowers are all different types, with different colors, a variety of them, each unique. The vase is white, but then has fun stripes, complimenting the flowers, with the flowers emitting a breeze and butterflies of different colors in the air as well.

For my movement, I chose (a bag for consistency), but this time, I chose to do a cyan color with a pink bow. The bow has ribbons flowing, moving in (an attempt for it to look pretty), and one ribbon is curling, while the other is looser. You can see the tips/ends of both ribbons in the sides of the bag, (I would imagine the back of the bag would show the rest), and it’s showing the bow move and flow pretty.

Principles of Design: UNITY

For my principle of design UNITY, I chose a simple design. It looked better in my head.. but I like how it turned out. It’s a black grey patchy bag, and in the center design, a heart. The heart has multiple puzzle pieces, all coming together out of different sizes and shapes, and different colors, all mixing and clicking as one to create a harmonious heart, a “united” one that shows unity. I like it.

Principles of Design: BALANCE

For my principles of design balance, I chose to do a Ying-Yang symbol, as in my mind, it’s the most perfect example of balance. The light and darkness cannot lie. Without each other, and then to compliment that, I added the sun and moon, to further add more to the idea of light and dark balancing, then I made two half’s of the bag yellow and blue, to represent the balance between the sun and moon.

Principles of Art: PATTERN

For my pattern I chose to do a bag (again) with the ocean, but two of the oceans’ surface. One on the bag handle, upside down, and one on the bottom of the bag, both have a sunset that meet a yellow in the middle, with bubbles in a pattern matching up. I like it.

Artist Statements:

I am very proud to be presenting these on my poster here today, as each of these took some time to brainstorm on how to go-about each category with.

What piece do I feel turned out the best?

I personally think the “Movement” piece looks the best. It was extremely enjoyable to make, as it’s a pink bow with moving ribbons, flowing ever-gracefully into all sides of the bag. If it were me, I’d say it would look the best on a real bag!

What was most difficult when making these pieces? For me, it’s definitely coming up with ideas. Sometimes it’s hard to think of what to make even if it’s right in front of you. I believe that's why you can look at a blank piece of paper as either the most amazing, or scary thing! It all depends on how you look at it.

What is the takeaway from this?

Art is definitely such an expansive, vast world of possibilities, and there are many ways to go-about it. That’s what I take away from this, it was very challenging at some points to step outside the box! The ribbon for instance was more in-line with what I usually make, but other ones, such as unity, were more challenging, but a good challenge! I have learned from this to appreciate the different principles as they are.

Artist Statement: This is my final design. I have decided to do a black and white Princess Peach artwork. It’s an original drawing of her, winking, with her body turned, and her hair flowing. I think it looks pretty nice, and I’m so very excited to do it on a real bag! It incorporates contrast, as it’s all white with very dark black lines sketching, my art style naturally has very dark heavy shading with lines, and goes very dark against the white base, and the heart next to her is very “standout” next to the plain background.

This was my art project final! I decided to do my final design, as the design I chose to do on my bag. My item is functional because it’s a tote bag. This can be used anywhere and for anything that you want to hold with. It’s more dominant in CONTRAST because it has a dark heavily detailed Peach, with the back and rest all being white, it’s black and white adding that effect. In my concept from prior that I decided to do, I did Peach’s modern design, where she has a more different face and dress. I ended up going for the same pose, but I decided to do her super smash bros melee design, from 2001. It keeps the same pose and details otherwise, and I’m very proud of it.

Here is my only in progress example. I did my art this morning during history class.. so I didn’t take time to get many photos. I have the back of the bag, where a failed attempt occurred, after that is when I decided to do her melee design.

For this assignment, I genuinely had more fun than I have in any other art assignment ever! I loved shading the rendering one, I’ve never done something like that, it was really fun! I definitely feel like I’ve learned some important things, considering I wanna pursue art in some form in my future. Cross shading is how I usually shade, but it’s great getting out of my zone.

For my pencil drawing (to show shading) I decided to draw concept art for an original character design, (by me). For the tutorial, I watched the eagle one and cherry picked what I liked. The techniques I used were a subtle combination of blending, (for facial shading), which isn’t usually what I do but I love how it turned out, and also LOTS of cross contour lines. I absolutely love cross contour lines and it’s always been my go-to for art. I love doing the hair and costume details like that, it’s so satisfying to see the lines blend. I also did some cross-hatching. It’s essentially my art style, but with some other stuff thrown in, like heavier shading. I like how she turned out.

I decided to do something somewhat odd, but it just felt like what I wanted to do. I did a hot Cheeto. In total I used white, bright red, yellow, orange, and dark pinkish red. watched the first linked video for general reference. Technique wise, I decided to do a mix of graduate black (for the very back of the hot Cheeto), gradate both heavy and light for the orange and yellowish hues, and also layering white. I (tried) to do burnishing but I feel it isn’t all so obvious, although I’m still mostly happy with the result. This is definitely something to learn for me, as I now know shading is something I need to truly perfect and begin to put time and effort into learning into the future. For my first time shading an object like this, I’m pretty proud of it but I know it could be better if I had more experience doing this type of art.

I personally had somewhat of a hard time with this one. It was nice in some ways, but I’ve never been to fond of chalk since it’s so messy, however it was nice to see different techniques. I think feathering was my favorite.

I decided to do the fourth tutorial for cherry picking. As far as techniques I decided to do a lot of twisting. I did hair, blue/purple ish hair, the back of it. A half up hairstyle that makes a bow. I’m happy with how the twisting ended up looking, as I layered a lot of twisting with different colors, about 4. I also did side stroking for the purple background.

I think this one was more fun than the normal pastels, the chalk ones. I like the texture, it’s like a smoother crayon. I can takeaway that I’ve learned so far that many art materials use the same techniques, which is so cool to see the outcome for each one.

I took inspiration from the last tutorial for certain things. I decided to make a flower, and I used 3 shades for the petals, 3 for the stem. I used a LOT of white to mix and blend the colors with pressure, and then I finished up with some sgrafitto get the little end results I wanted for the petals. Id say I like how it looks!

I watched the tutorials, both, and I don’t know how to feel about charcoal. It’s nice, it’s darker, but it almost feels thicker so harder to work with but that’s just me. Aside from that, I enjoyed trying something new!

I’ve decided to do an original drawing of Marie Antoinette for my charcoal art. I’ve spent a bit on this today, and I’m happy with the result. I blended charcoal in some areas such as her cheeks and nose to give shading, but decided to do most of the “shading” (hair and fabric) with fine lines. I like it! The charcoal was difficult to work with at times, but I did my best. The dress isn’t something specific from anything of her, but more of a mash of different rococo period details that I like. Same with the hair, it’s more of a general look that I like from that time. Her face isn’t supposed to be exactly accurate to her, it’s more of how I would depict her. I hope you like it!

For my acrylic paint art I decided to do this. I drew a girl/woman, with a big poofy bedazzled hair-piece and big hair. First time painting with acrylics, so definitely not great at it, but I used yellow, black, and red. I tried mixing it a bit to add facial shading, it turned out okay!

For my final choice, I decided to choose my charcoal art. I personally really liked how this one turned out. I didn’t exactly base it off of any specific image or portrait of her, but rather my mental image of her, like how I picture her in general, and with that it was done in the style I draw things. Charcoal was fun to work with, I liked making fine lines and shading, it was nice to make the details on her dress and hair especially, I loved doing the feathers too.

Practice Writing an Artist Statement

I believe the artist most likely used water colors for the whole thing, and possibly a mix of markers for the black outlines, but maybe? Not exactly sure completely. What stands out to me is the colors. They are so beautiful, I love how they blend together and make this formation of an ombré but it’s also swirling, rather than a typical vertical shift. I think the artists meaning is human connection, or love. That’s what I get from it.

For this assignment, I had to follow a tutorial on how to illustrate trees from a birds view. To be completely honest, I don’t like how any of them turned out. I tried a lot of attempts but I ended up with these, and I colored the one I liked most, using marker and oil pastels. I liked coloring.

This did not turn out well.. but it was fun to try! I tried to draw multiple items in my living room in front of my couch. I thought it was more accurate in my head, but a lot of lines ended up being completely misaligned, especially the console! That’s supposed to be a rectangle.

Here is the final! I decided to draw a girl with her eye/face cracking, like porcelain. I used a technique that I saw in an art book when I was around six, showing lines for the eye and nose, mouth and chin. I’m happy with the result?

Rule of Viewpoint

I took this photo from a lower angle, mainly to show the unique perspective. This is something I made a mini-display of, frutiger aero inspired, (the marketing/aesthetic that dominated all forms of marketing, tech, and in some cases architecture from the early 2000’s to early 2010’s, before being replaced by corporate Memphis). Frutiger aero has strong definition of 3d models, such as clear people icons (such as the replicas I have), and emphasis on blue and green. I love the tiny setup, and I have many more, so I decided to take the photo from a unique perspective. The viewpoint makes it feel more dynamic, and adds depth.

The visual merchandising basics I used was power of one and the power of three, and color harmony. The main subject is my Collector Mondo Poison Ivy Figure, from Batman: the Animated Series. I surrounded her with three plants, (complementary of her, both color wise and to reflect/be cohesive with her nature-based character.) The mix of subtle pink tones and greenery ties in strong with Poison Ivy’s colors. It makes a cohesive balanced look. The white background mixed with the plants, then her standing, makes her the center focus.

For my mastery I decided to do tattoo artist, (as I chose that prior). I decided to make a cuff, with ribbons and ruffles, and messy-woven netting. On the sides of the lacing and netting, the fabric has a unique print of curls and shapes! this makes me more interested to pursue this career!
