Coaching students to Use What They Know:
It is important to constantly think about what will transfer over to reading and writing with word activities.
As an educator you have to think about what is useful and purposeful to the student now rather then giving them new information they will not be able to transfer or apply in their next learning task.
There will be students who regardless of the transfer strategies you use, they will " just not get it". These are the students you will need to spend one-on-one or in small groups to figure out how to further help and figure out what they know. You may even have to coach them during activities.

This is a great opportunity to coach students. Take this as a teachable moment to examine their writing skills and correct mistakes on big words that they have not quite mastered writing. Use a variety of questions to help them understand what they are missing or what to look for when writing new words.
Help the students spell or sound out the word to find missing vowels or beginning or endings. Use Rhyming and your word wall to demonstrate what may be missing.

As educator every interaction is part of assessment. We gather information whether it is formal or informal everyday. When teaching phonics in spelling and reading you must focus on what the student uses most rather then what they know. This chapter gives us strategies on observations and how to better support the students during these transfer of information. You may find making adjustment to the strategies depending on what your students needs but nonetheless coaching them through the process of assessment will ensure the goal is reached.
